I know W2 is generally well received but I find some of these people giving the game 6/10 pretty depressing. It's not fanboyism I just can't see how anyone could rate this game that low. I've heard ridiculous comments like poor longevity, bad script, too hard to excuse such negative reviews. Hell 1 guy on metacritic even gave it a 0 because he had a faulty disc!

Can't help comparing this game to Portal 2 - a totally different game sure and a good one, but it was 8 hours long, very easy, no replay value and apart from some witty amusing dialogue nothing to really write home about. That game got near universal praise. In contrast I got 60 hours of sheer enjoyment out of the Witcher and that was just one playthrough - I want to play it again but I'm waiting until it's patched up with some more DLC added.

I just don't see how any fair reviewer could give it less than 8/10 it's positives far outweigh the negatives. Was really sad to see the Metacritic score fall below 90%. I just think what CDP achieved deserves better...

At some point in life, you're going to realize the only review that matters is your own (and possibly your wife's/husband's). ;p

I don't know really I just do... I can't help getting riled when I see people giving it low scores.

Opinions vary. Think of any celebrated classic game, you will find someone to trash it. And most of the negative reviews Ive read have some valid points, but I simply feel the weight they are assigning to them is distorted.

Either way, you've got to let that stuff go, or drive yourself crazy.

Go into any library, pick any real classic, in their times all had their critics, be it goethe, shakespeare or anyone else. Taste simply differs.

And what about the 100 % reviews? Are they so realistic?
I agree that a 6/10 is probably a bit low for this game, but I also think 90% is too much for the game, let alone 100%. I'd give the game something between 75-85 %.

So in my opinion, those lower reviews were necesary to compensate for the 100 % reviews.

I know it's hard to accept that a game that you love so much gets negative reviews. It's just normal that not everyone has the same taste. Some people might be more annoyed by issues that don't bother you, etc.

Don't forget that the reviews from the 'professional' critics are also the opinion of one person, or in the best case a handful of people.

And like someone else also mentioned; the best review for you is your own.
Only, the point of reviews is to actually get an impression of the game BEFORE you buy it :)

I didn't read any review. I pre-ordered the game in pure faith; and once my money was gone, I don't think there's much use for someone else's opinion but my own (as statet above).

It has it's problems. Maybe the Destructoid reviewer (or anyone else giving it that kind of score) would have given it a higher score after it's patched up a bit - although obviously they can't go back on their reviews and change scores

I'm sure some of the people that gave TW1 mediocre review scores initially after it first came out might have changed their mind somewhat after trying the Enhanced Edition of the game with it's improvements (I know I did)

A very simple counter to bad reviews is to talk to your friends and acquaintances that might be interested in the game and get them interested to play it, that way you're pulling in the people that a mediocre review might have chased away.

Back when Witcher 1 came out, I tried it out, and then very quickly had gotten about a dozen friends to buy the game and play it. Got a few to buy Witcher 2, too, now (out of those that hadn't already decided they'd buy it). Do the same, and to hell with bad (and 6/10 isn't actually bad) reviews.

Personally I use the following scale…

10 is reserved for God, if he/she exists and is still paying attention,
9 is reserved for my own work, for in the ideal situation and under the perfect circumstances (and given the budget and skill on my behalf) only I could create something epic enough to rate so high (and since it would be tailored exactly for my tastes it would be just about perfect).

Therefore if something gets 8, well that on the scale of things is very good.
And Witcher 2 gets 8 easily :)

There is a vast number of individuals who have the G.W. Bush (or Sith) mentality of “if you are not with us, you are against us” to voting. Therefore if they like something it has to be 10/10 or best game ever (and ever is a VERY long time) and if they hate something it has to be 1/10. Logically there cannot be anything in between (regardless of what their math teacher tells them).

Additionally, any pen and paper role player worth his/her dice will tell you that different people like different games. I personally know people who hate science fiction role playing games or hate fantasy role playing games. I have played with people who want to see elves and unicorns and are content with high fantasy settings with ¼ dungeons per square kilometre, and others (like me) who want to see real, living, breathing world filled with imperfect beings trying to do their very best under the circumstances.

I also happen to know people who prefer blondes over brunettes, while everyone worth their water knows that red heads are the best :)
In the end to each their own, I can accept that… it’s when that like/hate becomes fanatical and tries to influence a way in which things are and ensure most favourable final result for itself is when I get annoyed.

I believe that the Witcher 2 is a fantastic game that deserves some serious recognition and I would certainly like to see that reflected in a popular media. However popular media is not driven by a code of conduct but by the old mighty [insert name of the currency you use here]. Reviews and commentaries are often bought and traded for financial rewards or other considerations.

In the end I simply suggest you see the averages on sites like metacritic.com and hope that it reflects your perception of the product.

The few low scores aren't the problem, it's that the reviews are written so poorly.

These days, everyone is a critic, even the guy with unfinished highschool education...
After all, he has the access to the internet so everyone MUST listen and agree with his opinion :)
