Okies, my two cents...
What I would really like to see in a 'Fantasy' genre RPG is something along the lines of what I consider to be to ultimate, all-time best RPG ever. I am referring, of course, to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
No game in the history of gaming has anywhere near the RPG elements; a huge map full of cities, towns, villages, suburbs, country-sides, beaches, rivers, mountains, road and rail systems, plenty of 'walk-in' buildings and shops, you name it.
Instead of 'Leveling-up', in GTA: SA you honed your various skills - weapons, driving/riding, flying, bicycling, gang-member loyalty, charisma with chicks, 'luck' (as in when gambling), strength, endurance, etc., simply by practicing.
You had to eat and what you ate and how much you ate had a direct effect on your over-all fitness and body shape. Lol, I remember having to shed some pounds/kilos to be in the right shape to win a triathlon, Also had to gain or lose weight, build or lose muscles in order to be able to date certain women. Can't get much more RPG than that!
The myriad of clothes and hair-style choices also had an impact on your 'Repect' with gang-members as well as your desirability with women.
Whether pumping iron or honing martial-arts skills at a gym, playing pool for money, gambling on three or four different games at a casino, or placing a bet on a horse-race, they all added to the 'reality experience' of being in an alternate world.
Having said all this, I've hardly even scratched the surface of the content in GTA: SA as anyone who has played it will surely attest.
The point of all this is: as good as many of the 'Fantasy' RPGs are, they could be miles better if they 'stole a page', so to speak, from devs such as Rock* Games.
Just imagine it...
Cheers,
Wolfy
