Yesterday I got off work early, gleefully rubbing my hands as the download combined... I've watched a ton of Witcher 2 videos and it all had a feeling of a GREAT game.

After a lengthly install, I clicked "Launch Game". The Witcher medallion showed up, stayed there for 10 secs, then the launcher reappeared...
I retried some 20 times. Reinstalled the game to the default location. Rebooted Windows. Moved the game off my SSD to a traditional HD. Changed graphics settings. Changed graphics resolutions. Looked at Event Viewer. Nothing worked.

Only from a sheer bit of luck did I try launching the game in windowed mode. Then, the fun began.

Seriously GOG, did you even test the game on ATI hardware? Nothing is more frustrating that not being able to launch the game. Ripping my hair out while trying to figure out where you put the error log should not be a part of gaming experience. Please fix this ASAP.

My configuration is neither exotic, nor under powered. I hope the detailed hardware specs will help you to diagnose the problem:

Intel i920 overclocked to 3.6GHz
Biostar TPower X58A motherboard
9GB RAM (3x1gb + 3x2gb)
Asus HD 6970 (latest Catalyst driver)
Creative x-fi titatium soundcard
OCZ Agility 2 SSD
Samsung F3 HD
2560x1600 resolution

launches on my ati HW
I don't have this issue, but I believe some people were saying that if your resolution (in Windows, not just the game setting) was over 1920x1200 or some such, you had to play it windowed. Try lowering your resolution and see if it works.

Yep.. Could be a problem with some of the newer hardware and top-end settings. No issue on an HD5770 with 1680x1050.

Edit: Anyway, GOG didn't make the game, they are a sister company of CD Projekt RED but is merely a publisher in this case. Forums in thewitcher.com are down last I checked, but you should check in with them when they are up.

Set the lower resolution in your screen settings (i.e. 1920x1200) and the native resolution (2560x1600) in the game settings. It's a bit tricky but it works for me. Good luck.
Yep setting the desktop res lower and keeping the game res at 2560 worked for me too. Very annoying that I have to do this and clearly testing with ATI and 2560 resolution screens didn't happen.

Bit of a poor oversight in what is an amazing game, hopefully a patch will sort this soon as while not a difficult fix its very annoying having to alter my desktop res all of the time.
I realise that 2560x1600 isn't a very common resolution. But game not launching for desktop resolution over 1920x1200?

Wow :)

Thanks all for your tip! I'll try it post-haste.
I have the same exact problem.

I'm running a GTX 580, and my screen is 2560 x 1600.

This is unacceptable, hoping for a patch soon...

Have you tried the solution mentioned above? ;]

Runs fine on my 6970

How exactly is it "our fault" for having a good quality monitor?

Your HD 6970 is pretty high up there in the current ATI lineup as well. What would you think if CD Projekt decides it's your fault for buying such powerful GPU?

Larger monitors make it harder to run the game, whereas a more powerful GPU makes it easier. I don't understand your argument.

That being said, I'm sure things like this will be patched in later down the road. You just can't expect everything to run perfectly a day after release, especially on crazy high resolutions/less-common configurations.

Larger monitors with higher resolutions improve the gaming experience. World of difference between playing on a 22" inch and a 30" screen.

Just as a powerful gpu and faster processor and memory will help to improve the gaming expereince.

I don't find Thacmai's argument difficult to follow at all. He made a valid point. You shouldn't put the blame on a gamer for trying to improve his gaming experience.

I'm not blaming anyone, so much as pointing out how useless it is to be a dick when every imaginable resolution isn't immediately supported. Bringing up that it's a problem is fine, but acting like it's some huge injustice is just crazy. The game was just released, give it some time.

Man you are too funny. First you say "but they never think its their fault for having such a high res" then you call them a dick and crazy for pointing out that the game won't even start because they have a higher resolution than 1920 and then you try and claim you aren't blaming anyone.
