Well, we probably all have in mind what a traditional RPGs must have: character build up, stats, class, dialogue, cutscene etc...
But I am thinking about new RPGs. What would be the compelling features that RPGs must have or must not have in your mind?
Allow me to start the thread with a few features that I have in mind:
1. WEAPON SCABBARDS: I am so tired on those weapon floating 5 inches away from the back. Seriously with all improvement in graphics, it is a must now to do something that add to realism.
2. GUI AND INVENTORY: there should be a junk class to dispose unused stuffs. There should be away to display the real armor while buying at merchandise. There should be away to buy more stuffs at merchandise while crafting.
The inventory should reflect realism and discourage hoarding. There should be storage place - and there should be a lot more limitation on how much we can carry. We should ready the weapons before the battle rather than going through a list of 10 swords in a fight.
3. REAL TIME CUTSCENE AND FINISHING MOVES: I believe that RPGs most are taking path of action RPGs and so are actions adventure games. The cutscene and finishing moves bring in realism as well as immersion. It makes the battle more epic, more believable.
4. QTE EVENTS: adding QTE especially in dialogue is an awesome feature : either we want to jumb in action or we want a diplomacy path.
Adding QTE in combat is also fun a way that would reward you with more cutscene or a faster way to beat the boss.
I am aware with QTE haters in this game. So I have a new compromise: how about not forcing you through a QTE; however, it you response a QTE event, you are rewarded with the second way to beat up your opponent. For example: the Kayran battle. You can either cut all of the Kayran tentacle off, bleed him until he die or you can grab a QTE and ride his tentacle?
5. ROMANCE AND SEX: no hero should fight a battle alone, simply put. To have a companion at side during battle or on bed is equally important. It is an intrinsic part of the storytelling. It makes us gamers believe in the character we play, make we feel the protagonist as more human.

edit:
No I am not stressing for porn in video games! I just believe that video games, especially RPGs are like storytelling, movies. Adding romance makes the plot rich.
It makes the character believable ! yes, it is. How can someone achieve so much without having friend and love at all.
The elder scrolls series is, for me, a classic example of "lone hero".
The mass effect 2 romance with alien is another classic tasteless forced romance. All of the romance options are sucked and should have been just friendship options. Bioware pleases some fans and degenerates their game. Poor tastes

6. MINIGAMES, POTIONS, ENHANCEMENTS: these feature are the "same old" ; nevertheless, it seems to be taken off in newer RPGs. I believe that those features prolong the gameplay time. Making those features vital for harder level is a must for RPGs. After character building and stats are useless to pay attention without adding potions and enhancement.
Also, a hero shouldn't spend all day long hunting monsters and killing bandits. We should have free time at a tarvern or bar or so.
7. AN ARTBOOK. There preminum features - yet, I believe they are must have in preminum version of the game. I personally believe that the producer will make a lot more $$$ by publishing an accompany artbook with the game. It compells us hardcore fan to stay with the legit version rather that a scrappy CDs or thepiratebay.
8. A FORUMS: it is as much importance as advertisement, PR for developers
