 That would be quite the swift kick to the groin... however if I do that, than any time I want to save I have to switch to hard, then re-switch back, on and on. Would be very annoying. :(

 You should be safe just switching your difficulty to hard, patching, then switching back to "insane" and keeping it there. It seems as though the act of patching somehow caused it rather than playing on a different patch than the insane save was started on, but so few people play on insane that it's difficult to be sure. Figured a little warning wouldn't hurt, though :)
