Vague-rant: So, has no one completed an Insane run?

I've only tried 2, one died during the quick time event with the dragon (swear that one's a little glitchy) and the other was an endrega queen. After that I didn't try again- I just felt like I'd wasted about 10 hours.
I am working on my first insane run. Took a break while waiting for 1.3 DLC quest for ch.2. I am heavy alchemy and really enjoying my bombs. Haven't had any close calls yet, and like someone else said the only worrisome area for me was getting Foltest across the bridge with the dragon trying to get you. That is glitchy as hell IMO. I either get it in 1 shot, or sit there for an hour doing it over and over and over again because the keys don't respond quickly, or the dragon is already on top of me after the cut scene, or it is moving faster than it should. There have been several times when I was running the second the cut-scene was over and the damn dragon mowed me down before I even had a chance to get to the first fire breath. Very annoying.

If you have an xbox controller for pc laying around, do yourself the favor and plug it in, if only for this one scene. Difficult QTE's off. While cutscene is running, push down the left stick and that's it, nothing more to it, no left or right or anything. Just don't let go until the next cutscene (where she eats your sword).

I wanted to make my own no death run, but without insane, because the proper version of that is yet to come. Made it until the hoardes and got burned randomly. There are just a couple of situations in the game that are too unfair to play on insane, because you can die easily without even making a mistake. If I'd try on insane, I'd employ the workaround tool for those unfair situations.
The cheap deaths are what really spoils Insane.

I don't mind being killed through my own mistakes, but there are a few sections/times where you die when you shouldn't, or you get hit when you shouldn't.

On top of that, you have to put up with unresponsive controls, which always happen at the worst time.

I might give Insane another go with a different build, not because I struggled with this one, but for something different.

For this one I mainly put all my points into swordsmanship and magic (Quen), and increased my vitality and vigour as much as possible.

I've never tried "Sense of Magic", but it looks tempting for the next run.

wormholewizards: Yeah, perhaps i'm still looking down on those creatures. Because my approach is similar with fighting human. And i forgot about bomb too. Apparently monster in Witcher 2 is deadlier than human.
Nekkers are less-well armed or armored than many of the humans you've already fought, but they're fast, can burrow or unburrow quite quickly, tend to be in significantly larger groups, and where there's a group it's often not in an area where they're the only foes -- careless rolling can often bring you to another monster or group thereof.

In the caves, they'll only follow you so far from their spawning points, and they completely lack ranged attacks. Feel free to abuse this. Because they're normally found in numbers and they lack significant immunities, bombs can be economical -- Grapeshot, Red Haze, Dancing Star come to mind. You could even collect traps from the forest and use them in the narrow cave passages, although then you have to be careful about not running into them yourself.

wormholewizards: I want Insane difficulty without game over. Love it when looting is much harder to get useful item and enemy AI slightly harder. Please CDPR, make it happen. Or any mods?

Aaden: This one, maybe. I have no experience with it, though, so I have no idea if it's any good.

honestly, the description of that mod seems a bit over the edge. I doubt anyone dares Insane with it installed.

If you want a challenge, try Insane with No Shirt and only weapons you can craft yourself. It's wonderful! =)
No way I'll try insane until all the major glitches are fixed. to get halfway through and be killed by the bomb throwing bug? No thanks. :(
Well, I just tried another Insane run.

I made it to Chapter 2, and then the awful controls got me killed.

I couldn't attack, or use any signs until I was hit.

Even then, to use a sign I would have to press the button 3-4 times.

This is the biggest and most annoying problem this game has.

PLEASE fix it.

EDIT: In case someone posts to tell me it's because of vigour, it's not, I had full vigour and it's not the first time it's happened.

It happens often, unfortunately.

That control bug happens to me a lot as well, frustrating as hell. I would like to give insane a try but it's kind of a joke right now with the shit controls.

Anarki_Hunter: I did a total of 7 insane runs...all of them ended before I even progress till half the game.

1. Prologue: Died in dragons fire
2. Prologue: Died when I rushed into archery fire after the siege on the walls
3. Prologue: Died when I accidentally stepped multiple times into fire in the City
3. Chapter 1: Died when Nekkers ganged by the dozen in the caves
4. Chapter 1: Died against the 'Old Man'
5. Chapter 1: Died against *spoiler character* at elven ruins, totally freaky way to die..was tapping sword block/parry against a poison gas bomb! "-_-...
6. Chapter 2: Died on Helselt's side during the starting of Chapter 2 (the ghosts on Henselts side in the FOG appear to be a bit more difficult to fight than while fighting with the other side/path)
7. Chapter 2: Died on Helselt's side when I was charred to death while standing on fire (curtesy of the dialog taking place on FIRE.....during arm wrestling conversation)
8. Gave up Insane difficulty, As I figured I play the game for content/roleplay and not power-gaming (breaks my immersion in the game)

Unless one has really high resistance to incineration/fire, I suggest not remaining for a long time in conversation vs arm wrestling NPC's in Henselt's camp.
I consider Insane ridiculous. Specially from a programmer's stand point. What's the point if you can reload a previous save?
instead of wasting your time by implementing something that's a gimmick do something more creative.

Dying in Insane mode, locks up the save files. I just put forth my..deaths incrementally with respect to the game's progress (so that its a bit easy to note how far I progressed).

The insane difficulty is not a gimmick, its an added replay value and encourages revisiting content you might have missed (& not known that they existed)

Yeah, I've pretty much given up on Insane until it gets fixed.

I'm not about to devote a lot of time and energy, only to die because I can't access the controls.

This control bug is so frustrating and annoying.

It's even more puzzling because I can hit and dodge faster than in any other game, so when it works the controls are really responsive.

Corrected :D

I honestly believe one should be able to enjoy everything a game has to offer in one run. I don't know how many cases of replay there are considering the average PC gamer age(36) but from a personal perspective is not something I do anymore. Gaming is already time consuming (for someone who has been doing it since age 5) and there's always exposition to repetitiveness. Repetitiveness it's something you have to put up with if you want to see the rest of the content you didn't see on the first run. That repetitiveness kills the replay value for me. (Of course, you can always reload a game and branch out on a different path in an RPG like this one) but by the time I can do this I've already moved on.

Consider my particular case where I returned to gaming after a 2 year period just because I was interested in The Witcher. In reality it is a point in my life where I'm not that much interested in gaming anymore and everything looks generic to me after so many games. Maybe it's just because I'm jaded or maybe it's because there isn't much left to do in gaming that I haven't tried.
