I'm about to have to give up the game. I must have made more than thirty runs at the Kayren, I've watched the videos, read every message I can find, and I still get the crap knocked out of me every time. Best I've done is to get to the third tentacle one time. I've taken the Mongoose potion, used the space bar to roll....everything I can think of.
Two thoughts: My Geralt may be too undeveloped in stats and/or my reflexes are just too damn slow.
I start with casting Quen then running/rolling to the left to get the outer left tentacle. When I get to the "gold" spot for the tentacle I cast Yrden. While moving in to the right place for Yrden I usually get killed. If I'm lucky I get one tentacle, then while trying to get the second I get killed.
It's hard on my gamer's pride to admit this, but the game is losing its fun. Can anyone suggest tactics or outright cheats that can move me beyond the $#)* Kayren?
This question / problem has been solved by Kindoimage
Be patient with each tentacle, and I recommend starting from the right. I always take out the one second from the right first.

So first I run right to dodge the two middle tentacles that come down in the beginning. Then I stand in place, wait for that second-from-the-right tentacle to move up (which means it's about to attack), then roll to the right. When I've seen where it lands, I get under it again and cast Yrden, standing in place until it goes up to attack again. Then I roll to the right again, and attack the tentacle with strong attacks. Once it's cut, you can stand in place and avoid the Kayran's temper tantrum (since that tentacle that would normally hit you is gone).

The right-most tentacle will swipe at you if you get too close, but it'll attack you if you stay near the already-cut one, so put down a Yrden in front of the severed tentacle and dodge when it goes up to attack. Cut it, stand in place while it has its temper tantrum again.

Wait for the end of that where all the tentacles hit the ground at once, then run under to the left. One of the tentacles will attack you by the time you get there, but if you're running it shouldn't hit you. Get to the second tentacle from the left, and repeat the previous thing (wait for it to attack, then get under where it lands to set Yrden).

Once that's cut off a QTE sequence will begin. On normal difficulty and above (with difficult QTEs enabled), you'll have to right-click to get on the tentacle, left-click to fill up a bar, then hit the space bar to dismount. Then you can cast quen on yourself, run to the left, go up the bridge that fell. If you get to the left side of the bridge, you should get hit with one rock and Quen will absorb the damage. Then you can just run up, a cutscene will trigger, and the Kayran will be dead :)

EDIT: And if none of that works, upload your save to mediafire or something and someone can finish it off for you.

it's only a timing question :
- Start by rolling away immediately when he start to lift his tentacle to crush you.
- Then, immediatly after, when the tentacle start to lift again from the floor, cast Yrden right where you stand.
- stay at the same place, and wait a couple of seconds to makes Karyan start another strike.
- then roll again. The tentacle, aiming at your precedent position (and to the yrden near you were standing), will get stuck.
- immediately run near stuck tentacle and hit it with the Silver sword (important, the silver one).

Quen is not very useful until you cut off two tentacles, and four after, when the monster start to whip off the whole area.
Avoid his whipping each time by standing at the extreme corners of the zone, where tentacles can't hit you, and restart again until you cut off the four tentacles (two on each side).
Then you will have to run on his back, and with a smal QTE slay him ;)
Take not just Mongoose, but also Swallow and another protective potion like Virga.

There's a (usually) safe spot at the foot of the bridge; get behind the foot of the figure and as close to the column as you can. You can recover there between assaults on the tentacles.

You only need to cut three tentacles, not all four. After the third, cast Quen and get close to one of the central tentacles; get the tentacle ride, and the rest is easier.

The player skill needed for this quest is casting and rolling away. If you are not good at it, you will get better by the time you master the quest.

The Kayren* after repeated playthrough will appear to behave like an animatronic dinosaur (from theme parks), its 100% predictable after you fight it for 5-6 times. [this fight could have been made better]

Only thing is that you need to figure out what to do when the bridge ruin's(pieces) fall on the Kayran. :)

I have been in a similar position and had someone help me with the fight. I emailed him my savegame and he completed it. That way my character stays intact with all the choices I made. At this point I can defeat him myself since I had to rebuild my character I decided to try a few times and succeeded. I can offer you to kill him for you if you want to get beyond this point in the game. Just send me a private message and I will give you my email address.

PS: you could consider that a cheat but this fight can be rediculously frustrating.

Send me the save man, i'd be happy to beat it for you. Preferably a save just before the fight so i can add my own potions
It's strange how so many players have such entirely different opinions regarding the difficulty of this fight. To me, it turned into one of the most predictable and simple fights in the game, once I had been given a few minutes to figure out the patterns involved; once you do that, and are at least somewhat familiar with classic action games (or even some platform games), you can usually finish the whole fight without ever taking a hit. Then there are many others who find it insanely difficult, even after trying for over an hour. Since I can't relate, it's hard to figure out what exactly is the problem (without seeing a demonstration first) - not counting any QTE problems due to low FPS or what have you - so it's hard to give any more than just general advise.

Prepare with potions: Mongoose for poison resistance, Swallow for vitality regeneration, plus a third potion of your choice, preferably a second potion that helps your vitality regeneration.

Take at least one point in Feetwork: This is probably the most used skill in the game. No matter your build, you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone that doesn't take at least one point in this talent. It makes dodging those tentacles so much easier.

Find the safe spot: One aspect of this fight that turns it into much less of a challenge, is that you can actually stay in one place most of the time, safely out of range of both its tentacle attack combo (after dismembering a tentacle), and its poison spit. I usually go to the left side, and stand back at a comfortable distance in the corner there. This is the place to retreat to each time you successfully remove a tentacle, as the kayran then goes into a series of attacks and/or spitting poison; each of these attacks are almost directly in front of it, so as long as you're standing at an angle, he can't hit you. Simply wait for things to simmer down, and resume the fight.

Swiftly place your traps: When the kayran is not in the process of flailing its arms around madly (as per the combo series mentioned above), you have to trick the two 'vulnerable' tentacles on each side to slam down on your Yrden trap (and your kayran trap, if you made one). Line up 'vertically' with whatever tentacle you want to trap - whichever tentacle is more 'vertically' in line with Geralt, will perform the slam attack on him. If you're staring straight at it, it's just a matter of rolling out of the way when you see him raising it in preparation for the attack. Once the tentacle has started moving, it has already 'decided' exactly where on the ground it will hit, so all you need to dodge straight left or right to get out of the way. Right after dodging one of these attacks, quickly run back to where the tentacle landed, and place an Yrden trap (or the kayran trap); then stand on top of the Yrden, waiting for its tentacle to be raised again. As soon as you see it being raised, dodge out of the way again. Barring any random oddities, the tentacle will land right on the trap, paralysing it. Simply run up to the pulsating red lump of the tentacle, and start hacking away.

Once you've got this mastered, it's a simple matter of rinse and repeat. Hack of the second tentacle on the same side; after that, you must move over to the other side. This can be done while he's in the middle of his attack combo, immediately after destroying the second tentacle, using clever stop-and-go techniques and dodging to not be hit; but it's obviously safer to wait until after he's calmed down and you can quite calmly saunter on over to the other side. Once you're there, line up with one of the two outer tentacles, luring it to try attacking you - once you've expertly moved out of the way, place your Yrden trap as usual, and do whatever you did back on the previous side. Once the third tentacle has been removed, stand not too far away from the kayran, but definitely not too close either, and await the next stage. It will make a big, wide swing at you, and depending on if you have Difficult QTE's set to on or off, you might have to quickly right-click when it comes close to you, in order to latch on to it (if the setting is switched off, Geralt will do this automatically). Then some turbo-clicking (left mouse button), and then be ready to hit spacebar to jump off at the appropriate time (again, this is not needed if the setting above is turned off).

If you're successful, the final stage begins, and this is even easier than anything else in the fight. As you see the bridge collapsing, you may have noticed it forms a very convenient ramp up to the now-trapped kayran underneath. Start heading for it as soon as you can, and climb up it as fast as possible. There might be the occasional boulder thrown at you, or a tentacle slam, but I've found that if you're fast enough to start making your way up there, the kayran never has the time to react - still, pop a Quen before you start moving, just to be safe.

Voilà! Since the entire fight is so heavily based on finding the right pattern, it can be done without ever taking any damage, so there's no need to worry about your Geralt being under-powered or under-equipped in some way. With some practice, and some general attentiveness and quick reflexes, it shouldn't pose much of a problem even if you are completely unlevelled and are fighting it without any pants on. :P

I'm humbled by the avalanche of useful posts. I wish I could have marked them all as solutions. Thank you so much everyone. Since as Kindo suggested (LOL) I am "fighting without any pants on", I guess I'll just have to pull them up and try again.

You are all a great group!

If you need a hand, private message me or post a save game as 227 suggested. There is no shame, this game is horribly unbalanced, I had trouble with it too. No shame at all. Pay 50 or so euro's for a game and get stuck at this ? Get past it.

Happy to help! It wasn't entirely intentional, to be honest; I just started typing, and suddenly I noticed that I had gone through the entire fight. :o

I didn't, and you're right it makes dodging more difficult.

However, if you take a vigour potion and use Quen getting hit really isn't that big a deal, even playing on Hard.

I had no problem with the actual fight, dodging tentacles and making chop chop to the glowy parts.

Its just the QTE event which has me at a loss. Basically even after setting the game to low difficuly QTE off and to easy - even when i manage fill the QTE up to fill it (rare), it doesn't register. I'm not given the press space trigger to jump to the bridge.

I blame it on my laptop slightly old or maybe my mouse, but i bought this game and can't get past the first level I really like it and dont want it to be just a waste of money :(

Here's a link if anyone can help me :'(
