Same issue when I launch the game from the launcher, setting to a lower res and disabling fullscreen allows the game to run, but meh :(
I'm getting the same problem with the direct2drive version of TW2 (I downloaded the proper patch for digital download versions of the game).

Every time I tried to run the patch I get that error message.

I don't have any mods or anything installed (did not alter or touch any of the game files.. it's a clean, original install).

Any help?

I also have the same problem with D2D version. Don't have DLCs installed.
I have exactly this problem. I tried to contact GOG support and have heard nothing. I am currently VERY unimpressed. I now have a game I cannot play!
Its due to mods and any .dzip files you have downloaded and added to your CookedPc folder.
Remove them, patch , then put them back and play.

No idea why a clean install does this.
were you sure to uninstall, then manually delete any leftover game files and registry entries before installing again?

Hi all,

Ok, I actually figured this out.

In my case, the problem was caused by an antivirus product known as 'Immunet' silently quarantining witcher2.exe. This quite literally meant the game was incomplete! The patcher then detects this and fails with the 'Installed game version is invalid or incomplete' message (CD Projekt - how about actually telling us what is missing?). The game itself also can't launch because witcher2.exe is not available, but it never properly errors on that, just hangs forever (fix this too CD Projekt! A meaningful error would have been very useful and saved me a lot of mucking about! Seriously, I'm a coder myself and this is basic programming practice!).

If you have Immunet, this is likely your issue. If you don't then it may still be a similar issue - check your antivir isn't quarantining something is shouldn't. Also - go and look to see if 'witcher2.exe' is present in your install. It lives in the \bin folder. If it is missing, try to find out why.

I have also contacted Immunet about this, so maybe they will fix it for that product. Or not.

Good luck folks,

I was playing the game for awhile with long load times, freezes, and crashes. Decided to reinstall to make sure I got the right patch. Now all I get is this message and can no longer play the game. E-Mailed CDPROJEKT three times, no reply.
I had the same error message with patch 1.1. In my case my original install of troll trouble via the launcher had marked the troll trouble dlc file read only. Clearing the file attribute allowed the patch installer to properly overwrite the file and successfully complete.

I gather there may be several causes for this error message, so this may/may not apply to your situation.
I used mods and this happened.

I did a reinstall and the patch went fine and all the mods I added in since works flawlessly.
I'm having the same error message though haven't modded the game at all.

What I have done is download a save from Witcher 1 from the internet and changed some values in the user.nfo file so I could switch my Y axis, but haven't really mucked with the game otherwise. The Witcher.exe file is in the bin folder.

Not a fan of this situation!
I've still got this problem and it's really annoying. I've reinstalled and I get the same problem. How the hell do I fix this!!!! Come on GOG!

From thwitcher.com support page:

Error with invalid or incomplete game version occurs in cases when wrong patch version is being applied to the game, or when the game for some reason cannot find all the necessary files. It can happen if the game was installed in catalogue named using diactric signs, which are not recognized with currenty Windows language settings. It is also caused by changing the default location of My Documents folder, installing game on Windows Vista or Windows 7 without administrator priviliges or just simply lack of space on C: HDD. In order to solve this problem, one has to:

1) Download and install the patch according to guides that can be found on: http://en.thewitcher.com/patch/
2) Before installing the patch delete all dzip files beside pack0.dzip and troll.dzip from CookedPC folder in The Witcher 2 installation directory.
3) If the above does not help, please uninstall the game.
4) Make sure that all files from the game's folder were deleted.
5) Make sure that My Documents folder is in Windows' default location.
6) Run the installer as the Administrator
7) Install the game in folder that doesn't include diactric signs.

This covers anything I can think of that would be causing the problem. It doesn't mention to make try installing with launcher closed. Oughta try that too.
Thanks hanns.g, that's not the answer. However finally I did find the right one.

I've been pulling my hair out (what little I have left), trawling the internet for answers, following all the suggestions and none of them worked. In the end, it was the fact that to 1.1 patch for GOG is NOT the same as the patch for everyone else.

*sigh*

At least it's working now.

Cool!

Actually that bit of info is buried in there if you follow the link http://en.thewitcher.com/patch/

But, you got it. All good. :)
