kindiboy: 30 is low for this game, because it can drop to 15 if you have alot of monsters to fight.
what you are describing suggests something is working in the background, because the game doesn't do that on its own. if you have anti-virus switch it off if that didn't work, try raising the texture memory size. FPS always go hand in hand with how well a game runs it doesn't mean it's the only factor.

Kurgen: I only stated a frame-rate of 30 to illustrate why it's irrelevant when suffering this stutter. It's not the first time a new game has had this problem, and it's normally fixable by patch or video driver update. At the moment I'm tolerating it.

My gaming PC is about as clean-running a PC as you're ever likely to find; only used for games & graphics/photo work, no anti-virus, no firewall (except Windows own crappy one), no anti-spy/malware... in short, no extraneous background processes that might interfere. It's a game or driver issue, with 100% certainty, and the fact that I'm not the only ATi user to report this problem speaks volumes.
Stutter... did you enable v-sync?
am an ATI user everything is working the way it should.
your cpu is completely inadequate to handle this game. leave the windows task manager open and start the game. In the middle of a combat situation press alt+tab and you'll see, under the performance tab in the task manager, both cores being used at max.

if you buy a better cpu You will get WAY better fps and less stuttering and lag.
I am running it on around 30-40 fps, no problems yet, on chapter 3

kindiboy: lol...numbers go hand in hand of how well it runs...that's not debatable.

SystemShock7: I don't think you understood what I was saying... sure if FRAPS says 5 FPS, ok.
No, I am talking about having this number in our head which you think is good, but seeing anything less than that number, convinces you there is something wrong ansd you satrt "seeing" something wrong even if it is not there.
OH now I get what you mean, yea I absolutely agree.

I have almost the same sys specs (AMD Phenom 2 1050 2.8/6 Core/Kingston 14gb) and the exact same card, yet I'm running the game at 1440x900 with everything ultra, save for the Uber sampling and AA, and I get 60-35 FPS at prologue (Both the battle on parapet and campground) But when I enable both AA and Uber..WHAM! I'm down to barely 30-15 at the same prologue! Another curious thing, whenever I let my game set the graphics I get a low setting! WTF!?

p0tn00dl3: Turn off motion blur, does amazing things to your FPS. Also i dont know if it would help but i used Large address Aware on my witcher2.exe something i now do to every game.

Interesting. Is this necessary for a modern game? Do you feel that it helped?

Those are in my opinion some serious gaming machines. It has to be driver or some kind of patch is needed or I don't stand a change with my computer. And my screen is 24", so Everything looks pretty much horrible if I don't play high resolutions or at least antilaliasing on.

Pelicashka: An update. I found that my video driver was a year old, even though Windows 7 64 bit was showing it as an up-to-date. After I installed the latest driver performance improved drastically. The game now plays smoothly on Medium settings in 1920x1080. Tried it with FRAPS, it showed 20-30 FPS, about 25 on average.

LOL at myself thinking that my previous poor performance was "about 25". I never measured, so it was probably lower, or maybe the old drivers just chopped away.

Anyway, I can finally play comfortably and enjoy the game. I wish they fix the resolutions issue, so that I won't have to change my desktop resolution in order to play.

My "PC" - iMac Core i7, ATI 5750 1 Gb Bootcamp
I have to re-quote myself again. The choppiness is back. Seems like it was smooth only in the very first area near the tent. The next levels, starting with ballista stutter again. Don't even get me started on the dragon fight. It's the 13-15 FPS territory. :(

The thing is that lowering the gphx settings does not do much. "Low" is only a couple FPS faster than "Medium" and still choppy. I play at 1920x1060 on a 2540x1400 screen. When I lower the resolution to the 1600 territory I still don't get any noticeable improvement and also the screen shows boxed for some reason. Setting the resolution even lower makes the box thicker - for some reason it does not blow up the image to fit the full screen. Is this some kind of bug as well??

Not a bug - for some reason CDP Red decided to only fully implement resolutions with a 16:9 aspect ratio - all other aspect ratios are letterboxed with black borders. Supposedly they're going to patch in support for 16:10 resolutions later, like 1680x1050 and 1920x1200
Anyone with a HD 6950 or 6970 have a problem with the fps?

LOL, Thanks, and believe me it wasn't that long ago (beginning of last year) that I was playing Oblivion with My 5-yr old rig: AMD 1.9 single core / 1gb ram with a 128 mb AGP 9550..It was so puny that I thought 15FPS were great! So $1,200 later I FINALLY have a beast worth bragging about!

1 or 2 gb? I'm always jacked from enabling AA with my ATI, I have a Sapphire HD 6950 2 gb card..(Err more of a drive as it dwarfs both my HDDs put together!) Try nixing the uber sampling and AA, and set all catalyst settings to "Application only" Hope that helps! BTW, How many cores do you have as this game relies heavily on your CPU!

@ Antimateria,

Thank you :)

@vivasawadee

HD 6950 2gb here

The only time i have a real problem with fps is when i put the settings higher than ultra, which is changing:
Texture memory size from large to verylarge.
Couple of weeks more. Then I'll buy the game. If the game won't run in phenom 1 (x4) 9750 2.4 ghz and with 6850 1gb then I'll be somewhat disappointed. I'm making a paypal account, signed here, like cd projekt in facebook well all for this game. Maybe possibly those things have uses in future.
But atleast I know I'll be contributing in future of PC-gaming.
Still playing first one and not finished. Love it. So if I buy few games this year. This is one of them... well other propably will be TES: Skyrim.
My cpu is a bit old but I just don't have the money tho buy a new one. And when I go that road I'll propably have to buy new motherboard also.
And it's good news that in W2 (I read somewhere) all dlc content supposed to be free.
So this was a bit offtopic but sue me. =)

timeaisis: Some people have crazy FPS expectations. 25 is fine. 30-40 is good. 50-60 is great. 60+ is excellent and also unnecessary. I'm running ~35 and the game looks great.
I'm sorry but that just isn't true for everybody. I hate playing ANY game less than 30 and prefer 60+ It's been shown that the brain can perceive the difference between 30/60 as well. I'm not an enthusiast by any means either; just means I have to turn settings down a lot. A game like TW2 isn't terribly demanding on the timing of things so you can get away with a sub-30 frame rate experience and not gripe too much, but in the end it's user preference so you can't really make statements like the above ^o^

have a blessed one!

OmegaX: I bet that the problem is your 5870M card. Isn't that a laptop card?
I have an HD5770 and I can play at ultra settings but with ubersampling disabled and I get minor slowdown in certain parts but overall the fps remain high.
Definitely not the problem. A 5870M is based on a 5770, but has a slightly slower clock rate.

The 5770 does perform better than 5870M due to the clock speed difference, but the difference is not huge. The 5870M on 3DMark06 scores a bit above a 5670, but if overclocked (which is actually viable since the 5870M outputs much less heat than the similar performing NVIDIA GTX 470M) the 5870M may actually give a stock 5770 a run for its money.

And you've come to this conclusion how exactly? Kurgen never posted what cpu he has in this thread.
