NON STORY RELATED SPOILERS. i beat the first playthrough focusing on swords in my character tree andit allowed me to do cool/ cinematic finishing moves killing 3 enemies. this would occur when a little bar ( i think the adrenaline bar) would fill up underneath your health bar.

i started a second playthrough focusing on magic in my character tree. i got to the end of the tree and unlockled heliotrope, which i am assuming is the extra magic in the game that was hyped up during the combat preview video pre-release. i was never able to fill the little bar underneath the health bar, that i assumed would cause a cool cinematic finisher like the sword path did. why was my sword finishing move so easy to build up? What am i doing wrong that caused me to not be able to enjoy "heliotrope"?
The adrenaline bar fills up when you cast signs, not through sword strikes.

The above poster told you the reason. Heliotrpoe Adrenaline bar is generate throught signs prevalently.

However in my 1st playthrough i could use the group finishers and heliotrope together. If some foes survive the grop finisher OR if is a boss/charachter that could not be "finished".
However it's not a "cool" cinematic finisher, but "just" a "bowl" that slown time, you move normally and yout foes slower , so you could perform lots of blow, signs, dodges and whatever. I feel it very similar to the withcer's Blizzard potion, somehow...

i would cast igni, aard, quen often, occasionally axii and the adrenaline bar barely filled up. my igni and other magic were also leveled up (i focused on the magic character tree).
Perhaps upgrade the skill that increases adrenaline generation. I noticed it took a while to fill up compared to alchemist and swordsman.

A quick way to fill the bar is to keep using level 2 igni on a group.

It is much harder to fill up the andrenaline bar by casting sign alone. You have the tendency to use your sword. You may want to build up both training so that using either sword and magic builds up the bar.

This is what I consider one of the game flaw
In my case, I just spammed Igni while fighting the Kaedwenis and harpies in Vergen.

Heliotrope'an all day erryday

now if only my vigor would replenish when I use Quen..
It takes a while to fill up. I assume they nerfed the amount of adrenaline you get through the signs since heliotrope is bloody devastating. I found I could obliterate large groups of enemies (as opposed to, say, three with the finishing sword move) and have ample time to heal and recharge vigour.

Keep up quen and cast igni into groups. Things that hit you for high damage (into quen) will fill your bar quickly. For instance, I cast heliotrope twice during the Operator fight; those gargoyles and the Operator hit for a ton of damage. (Made the fight a bit of a breeze...)

thanks, what is the operator fight?

Er... Well, you already beat the game. Maybe you won't care about spoilers. Don't read the next below if you do.

The Operator is an optional boss fight on Roche's path. It's quite clearly the hardest fight in the game; it was the only thing that killed me after the prologue (apart from missed QTEs), since I went in unprepared.

Search the board if you want to know how to face the guy. ;)

You can face Operator in Iorbeth's path as well
Quen attacks (when they hit your shield) count as a cast! Get hit with Quen on and the bar will fill right up!
Interesting, when I went for the mage build, and had the hellitrope, it only took me a Quen and couple of Aards to completely fill the bar, try adding a mutagen to the arendaline generation skill, thats what I did.
