Thanks, I found it just as I read your reply. I guess I should have found that but it was a little unintuitive.

So now the game is up to 1.1 but when the launcher is about to download 1.2 I get a "Connection refused - retrying in X seconds" error. along with a blank alert (just an ok button). The launcher connection icon also shows as Offline (a skull).

Worked, thanks a lot Aglynne.

I realize this community has spoiled me. usually I'd be a lot more methodical and structured in my problem solving, weeding out these kind of fairly easy errors early. But hey, as long as people are eager to help here I'd rather be rid of the added legwork. :-)

No problem, glad you got there. I love the fact that there's already been 2 patches but I must admit it hasn't been my most painless patching experience.

cooper: IS the patch showing for all of you? my list only shows the 1.1 patch -- not seeing the new one on the list and I don't know why.
There's no GoG-patches, anymore. From now on, they're all the same (except Steam). So after installing 1.1 your game should either auto-patch or you can download 1.2 from http://en.thewitcher.com/patch1-2/

Thank you Aaden, somehow I thought I read that differently on the main CDP site. I will try just using the autoinstaller or the link.

Uninstalling my antiviru program (ClamAV) fixed my problem.
