Am I missing something here? There is no direction indicator on the main game screen. If I want to know my direction, I have to open the map screen and see where Geralt's arrow is pointing (and hope that his arrow is visible at all). C'mon guys, forgetting to indicate direction on the mini-map is like forgetting your pants. Shouldn't happen, and is quite embarrassing when it does.

The direction is shown on the mini map. Go to your journal and double click on a quest to track it. If an arrow doesn't appear on the minimap than that usually means that some other quest needs to be completed before you can enter the next phase of the other.
there is also a mod that actually put a sign in your minimap for know where is the north. (I nerver tried, first play is without mods for me :P)

Also, note that there are a few quests where the objective won't have arrows on mini-map. (i.e., quests where you have to locate and destroy nests of nekkers, endrega, and harpies). However, you can get clues to their general location by reading books on the monsters / talking to NPCs. This can be frustrating, but it adds a bit of realism, because obviously the only way for Geralt to know where the nests are is to go out and find them....
I wasn't clear in what I meant by "direction", I guess. The quest arrows on the mini-map are fine (except when they're missing). However, sometimes I want to travel N, W, E, S, or some variant; and there's no compass points on the mini-map. This isn't a game breaker, but it's an omission that should not have occurred -- sort of a "doh" thing.

@Silverio13: thanks. I'll look for a mod.

There are some issues with the full mod with 2.0, but the version that just does the North Pointer still works.
