I'm really enjoying the game so far, but the swordplay is giving me some trouble. I've asked around about a particular problem that I've been having, but no one else has experienced this, so I thought I'd ask about it here

Basically, when I click an enemy to attack them, Geralt has been having a tendency to just take two steps towards them and then stand there doing nothing. This happens during just about every combat encounter. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm using a light attack, heavy attack, whether its the 1st, 2nd or 3rd attack in a combo, or whether I'm locked onto a target or not. It happens whether I'm mashing the attack buttons rapidly, or clicking in rhythm with his strikes. Doesn't matter if I'm holding a movement key or whether my hand is inches away from my keyboard. He'll just take two steps towards and enemy, stare at them, and usually get quickly killed as a result.

I'm trying to do a melee-focused playthrough without using Quen, but this issue has made trying it a bit frustrating. I really enjoy the game's combat system and the strategy involved, but when I can't rely on my attack button to actually attack something, things stop being so fun.

Has anyone else had this problem at all? Would switching to a gamepad give me better results?

edit: wow, bad grammar in the topic, should be 'geralt keep stopping mid-attack. whoops :|

I have the same problem, it's damn annoying when geralt moves 1 or 2 steps towards the enemy, i think it's keyboard lag. it's not about switching to gamepad i think everybody has this. I really hope CDPR fixes this.
in my last playtrough at the final fight with Letho i got stuck like you, meaning the only thing i could do was moving Geralt and could not attack with my sword or cast signs or block i had to move around him until he cast Aard on me flew in the air then i could use attacks again

Read his post more carefully.
Same problem here. Found this out when I stopped button-mashing and clicking each attack one by one.

My way of coping with it is
a) to dodge quickly when that happens (since I already been playing hit-and-run tactics dodging so is not too out of the way).
b) or press attack again. Sometimes I click 2-3 times just to be sure.
I'm glad it's not just me, then. I've brought the issue up on a few other message boards, but so far it's been met by people not knowing what the hell I'm talking about or thinking that I just don't know the basics of the combat system.

I've seen my brother play the game, and I don't see this happening to him at all. He's also tends to just wail on the attack button, rather than sync it with Geralt's attacks, so maybe you're onto something, AddictedGamer.

It just gets frustrating, because Geralt will mosey right next to the enemy and not do a damn thing. I've died so many times because of this, landing a blow or not can usually mean the difference between life and death on Hard.

There's no avoiding it. It will always happen :P Trust me i've tried. It's probably just a bug and i hope CDP will notice this also. I know it's damn annoying it breaks the combat system abit

I play on hard too so I totally understand what you mean, especially when some enemies tend to have combo attacks right after you missed.

In the extreme case you can hit once and dodge once if the mob is fairly close together, I invested 2 talents in dodge which works beautifully with this. Or, you can cast Aard on your opponent, staggering him which lets you land down 3 hits or so, then roll away.
