So I bought the game through d2d since gog didn't like my visa card/I didn't feel like setting up paypal. Well now I'm reading that if you strip the drm out of the witcher 2 it runs much better... Can anyone confirm this? An if this is the case can we get a fix? If we bought the game legitly IMO we shouldn't have to crack it to get better fps.
No.
DRM has NOTHING to do with performance, whoever told you is full of shit.

depending on how aggressive the drm is, it may affect performance, if your system is cpu bounded.

In this case: I have no idea
In general: It is actually quite possible for some forms of DRM to cause performance issues due to not being "used" properly or due to the nature of the DRM (Ubi-drm phones home constantly).

That being said, it is almost never an issue, and you generally take more of a hit from having an internet browser open in the background.
I have the GOG version and my game starts up in 10 seconds. My friend has the Steam version and it takes up to 60(!) seconds to start. Other than that no real difference.
Just BECAUSE is a steam version and NEED to start/call steam API (You know, achievements, check protection, steam client, steam cloud etc etc etc).

TW2 Seem to have a NORMAL securom as DRM in retail version (except steam which uses...steam!), so IT'S NOT affecting in-game performance.

So no FPS loss...

and NO, you DON'T HAVE the right to crack the game. I
having ran two versions of the game , one with drm and one not other than booting up the game it self runs the same (takes longer on the drm version)
We had this discussion in the biggest german gaming forum, the Gamestar Pinboard. It turned out that most people who tried the gog version exe on their retail version got much better performance. And I mean it. For one guy the difference was 24 fps average before and 34 fps average after.

It has already been reported in other german forums, like a big hard- and software related one (computerbase).

It's true. And it's sad. Luckly I already have the GOG version, but I pity everyone who now has to suffer just because they bought the retail version with Securom.

Really strange.

24 FPS vs 34 FPS is a GAIN of about 42% in performance for changes that should not interest performance but only checks and dll calls on startup.
i thought it was the launcher that did all that drm stuff anyway ? maybe haveing the drm in the background effects it but i never noticed my gog version runs the same in fraps on the same save file in the middle of the mists (where i got the worse frame drop) so from what i myself see ...nadda but maybe some people do i gess

Are you sure that they didn't offend the Soup-Nazi and that's the real reason??

I find it odd that you think this is because of Steam rather than the hardware configuration.

I also ran 2 versions of the game, one from GoG and one from Direct2drive on the same computer. I go from 25-28 FPS in Direct2drive version to 33-35 FPS when using the GoG version. My performance difference is repeatable, so no fluke going on. The only difference between the 2 would be the DRM. So yes, the DRM is affecting performance in this game.

You must be the one full of shit. I have the retail version (Securom infested) and replaced the .exe and .dll files with the GOG release. The game starts up FASTER, better frame rates, etc.

So, when will CDP release a patch to remove the DRM for all versions? Yeah, it's my fault I bought the retail one since I want the physical items. I should've went with GOG.

I have retail, EBGames, and starting takes ~60 seconds.
