I'm just starting Witcher 2 and I'm having serious combat problems - namely, I get my ass handed to me the moment I have to fight more than three enemies, because I simply get swarmed to the point where I can't dodge or parry or pretty much do anything. None of my signs seem to have an AoE effect to give me some space, and group style is apparently not a thing anymore.

Sincerely,

Nekker Fodder

Nekker fodder, eh? If you're in chapter 1, then I'd recommend focusing on bombs over signs. Grapeshot in particular has a knockback effect that can give you some room to maneuver, and Dancing Star can set your enemies on fire, buying you even more time.

Additionally, there are snares all around Flotsam forest that can be picked up in huge amounts. You can run around with 60 of them and set huge piles to one-shot enemies who you lure onto them. That requires a bit more planning, but it can be a lifesaver in certain situations (even some bosses can be beaten using nothing but snares).

Are snares reusable?

Quinch: Are snares reusable?
Yep. They take awhile to pick back up once you've used a large stack of them, but they're such a great way of turning the tables that it's totally worth it. Especially since you can carry them into the later chapters (that don't have any free snares available).
Grapeshot bombs will help you immensely. Also, try to level the dodge in swordsmanship to 200% when possible.
Personally, I rarely used traps and use tons of signs to deal with these problems. Usually I don't level up the signs too much, but do consider all level up options as it wasn't until pretty late in the game when I finally discovered some pretty useful level ups because all I would look at were the top and right portions of the stat screen.
Simple, don't engage multiple enemies at once.
If you dive into a mob of them you will die.

Keep moving, funnel them in tight corridors where they have to engage you one on one, use bombs and traps to thin their numbers, and take out the weakest members before retreating.
Dancing Star bombs do tremendous damage over time, as well as slowing opponents down. Red Haze bombs will make some of them attack each other. These are very effective bombs for crowd control.

Against two or three dangerous opponents, use Axii. You can get two of them to fight each other, while you recover or go after a third. This works well against wraiths.

Use Yrden to neutralize the most dangerous enemy of a group, or to cause them to pile up in a narrow place. Then throw a bomb into the crowd. Fighting fair is for amateur boxers. Fight as dirty as you want to.
The problem with Axii though is that it takes so long to channel; by the time you are finished there will be an enemy in your face.

I found it to be more efficient to just dodge and throw a Zerrikan Sun. Love those little things :D
Grapeshot helps a lot in the beggining, outmaneuver your enemies, go for the weakest link, dodge and deceive, lure them to strategic spots, that's the way its meant to be played, on harder dificulties this will be mandatory.

Afterall you're a Witcher, not Skyrim's Dragonborn God (don't take me wrong I love TES games).
