Back to topic. I guess his homosexuality was there to mirror Philippa's, which is not a bad thing. It's just that he was portrayed as a bad guy, mistreating his, uhh, lover? slave? and it's as if they used his sexual orientation to make him even more evil in the end. It did make me feel a bit uncomfortable.

Yeah, but none of the other characters were about to have sex before Roche's revenge-caine struck. I got the impression it was just because of what he was doing prior rather than special punishment because he's gay.

So as to not be completely irrelevant to the thread, I will say that Dethmold was awesome. I wanted to kill him ever since seeing this video before the game was even released. Glad you're given so much freedom to choose who lives and who dies.

Dethmold is a lot more parody of classic video game villains than anything else. You knew he was bad news from the start. His demeanor, his face, the fact that his name was DETHMOLD. What was interesting though is that they actually made me trust him for a little bit. He does genuinely do as told and assists you as best he can in trying to stop the curse, and then the ritual by the mid of the Act helps you along. As one suspects though, he takes to his own evil devices afterwards.

I just thought he was really well characterized overall, since he kept you in an awkward position between your comfort zone and out of it. The gay thing was a bit unecessary in terms of his character since they showed it in a bit of a demeaning manner, but I don't think it was a terrible idea overall. I doubt that it was meant to be a slur against homosexuals.

And you could be right, I am willing to accept that, it just still leaves a bad taste in my mouth seeing as how he is the only gay male in the whole series, really, and this is how he is portrayed. I do think that castrating "The Unicorn" would have been just as appropriate, if not more so.

I would like to say for the record, however, that I am not hoping that they patch the castration out in the next patch like they did that prayer rug. Its in the game and it is what it is and it should stay. I loved this game over all, and if the modding tools they release to us are good ones, there will be a lot more fun to be had with this game, too. Like making Dethmold's boytoy a whole lot sexier.

As for Dethmold as a character, I too really liked the character and I think from now on I will always rescue Triss when I play the Roche path.

The thing is I had certain prejudices against him from the start mainly due to dev diary on characters by CDPR - they explicitly stated they wanted to feel players uneasy right away and as far I can say, sort of made him look evil. He certainly made me uneasy, he was just weird BUT at the same time - he was really friendly! That kinda confused me. I think it's a shame personally, I would have wanted him to be more ambivalent, not just outright mad crazy bastard (so I am with Kindo there).

Here is just my opinion but i think the castration was just Roches way of saying you are not even a MAN because he does say something like you can not give back what you took from me meaning the ppl he loved those soldiers in that tent.

He did say earlier that everything that i loved died in this tent and we do find out that it was Dethmold that was leading the "massacre" in that tent.

So i think it was more personal than anything to Roche for Dethmold loosing his manhood like that but than again that is just one way interpret that :-)

Confused with the thread, is one supposed to like Deathmold or like the characterization(char development) of Deathmold.

For me, the confusion doesn't really lay in Roche's personal reasons within the story for doing what he did, the confusion for me lay in the Dev's decision making process and why they put this in the way that they did.

By the way, Roche should have known darn well that he was playing a dangerous game with the lives of his men by heading a conspiracy like that. Plus the focus should have been on finding the King Slayer, not conspiring against yet another King. The only action taken by the King concerning the conspiracy that I could really condemn was the rape of Ves. Killing the conspirators and the conspiracy leader's little army actually makes sense to me. How would the King know that they were innocent? And if Roche hard ordered them to take part they probably would have gladly done so.

That analysis makes assumptions about Vernon Roche's character that I am not sure we're entitled to make: namely, that he is open and truthful and dispassionately rational; that he is in all he does his late king's straightforward and loyal soldier.

Roche is more complex than that. While he's a Temerian patriot and fiercely loyal to his men, he's also a spy with a mean streak, a dark past, and a motive for revenge. I wouldn't put it beyond the realm of possibility that he has not played true with Geralt, either: the conspiracy against Henselt, not the hunt for the kingslayer or Iorveth, may have been his purpose all along.

The first time we meet Roche, he tortures a priest to death. Is it a wonder that he later mutilates a notably vicious enemy mage?

Agreed. But I cannot imagine how can you idolize this character since it has nothing positive in him after all. Being a pervert, pedofil, rotten,gay,Necromancer (there is nothing relevant with gay alone, but with the others in context, it makes worse).
Here are the attributes which makes him the perfect enemy of mine:
-Unfriendly: " I don't make friends, because as soon as you get to know them and their secrets, come interrogations, tortutres ..." -said in its tent in the very first conversation
-Lingering and pretending to be amiable: It speaks right away about good company and deal membership, as you enter the tent, however, you didn't said almost a word; he wants to shake hands; - such an inapropiate meeting style when you encounter a liar or a thief.
-Worse than a bighead: Everyone is an idiot for him, even if it expresses in subtle ways, which simple personalities tend to fail to identify. Example: says to Geralt speaking about books to read: " There is no shame if you cannot read. Many in these world are analphabets and can cope with their pitty life".
-Arrogant pet: knows that he is powerful only if remains near Henselt shadow, by this he reacts only and only for Henselts bidding.( It doesn't bothers really him those conspirators, until Master Henselt got mad, and resolved the problem as a nervos layman repairing a crashed PC: Eliminating anything suspicios just to make some solution)
For the sake of his power to maintain, does everything for Henselt, including making efforts to lift the curse, which proved to be a bit boring for him)
-An eager Necromancer: a perfect situation to emphasise this, the opposition with Sile when you had to "interrogate" Auckes. Perhaps Sile was against because her relation with the Kingslayers, though. But anyway, the impression remains.
-Selfish,distrustful, sly,dishonorable and posing everywhere, never speaking straight.

Plus a sick gay bastard.:P

Of course its a perfectly made character. But not the idolized one for me.

Now you got me all excited again for my 3rd playthrough. Quite a revelation there, i thought i already understand all the character in the game.
