anticitizen101: Considering the magic path is basically spells that you have to switch between, and that the only necessary spell during regular combat is Quen, the sword should do most of the work.

The alchemy path's Synthesis lvl2 skill basically increases the positive effects of potions and decreases the debuffs.

A Virga potion ends up giving +32% armor and substracting only 1% from 3 resistances.
Rook ends up giving +17% damage. Gadwall ends up at +3 combat regen with no negatives, and so on.

Basically, going up the magic tree means discarding the powerful buff offered by Synthesis (and well worth the 5 points) in favour of spreading out between spells, and having to switch around (or wasting points on magic you don't plan on using!).

With the 2nd build I posted, I killed Phillipa's Elemental in 3 hits. using the following potions: Virga, Tiara and Thunderbolt, using Addan Deith with 3 Ysgith runes.

More damage means less hassle. More defense means less hassle. Fewer spells also means less hassle. It's a win-win situation.

After my 3rd playthrough, I realized I don't need to waste points on venting, as I was merely using Quen as a shield, and Yrden ended up being fine without putting points into it.
You have point, but not using Quen at all sounds like almost suicide to me on hard level... i guess i will do another play through to test your build before i take the Insane level challenge on myself.
I will probably adjust it slightly.... also why didn't you put anything in the bomb upgrades, it can be very benefitial in some points, especially if the are many opponents going on you.

If you'd checked my builds, you'd notice that Quen is the only magic I've invested.

With sign intensity +2 and Arcane knowledge, my Quen timer reaches 3 min 5 sec, which is more than adequate for Hard difficulty (more time = you can take more hits).

As for bombs, never needed to use them. Quen allows you to dish combos while Whirl takes care of the "area of effect" part. They become obsolete quickly (I've never used bombs past chapter 1 of my first playthrough).

Also, wht about the dodge increase skill and the bombs damage increase?
Bombs - check my post above, I've edited it.

Dodge increase was useful only in the kayran fight. It's a good skill to have, maybe moving one point from Magical Vigor to dodging is a good idea if you really need it.

With an overpowered Quen, you won't even need to dodge much, except to get a breather to recast it.

I think I died only twice in my Hard playthrough, and both times was on the kayran fight.
First time he killed me in two hits, the 2nd time I missed a QTE (was using difficult QTEs) and got thrown into the bridge because I didn't jump from his tentacle.

If you want to play an insane run, disable hard QTEs so you won't die a cheap death at the "hands" of the kayran, and when faced with the choice of either going through the kaedwen camp or through the tunnels (to find triss), choose the tunnels (if you're on iorveth's side).

From what I hear, you die in 1 arrow shot if you're discovered in the kaedwenni camp (though I can't confirm this since I've never been caught in that sequence)

What is the QTEs?

This would be good advice in an insane difficulty thread..
But yeah, you do.

anticitizen101: PROTIP: Each point of SIGN INTENSITY adds 25 seconds to the Quen time. This is NOT explained anywhere in the game.
Ahh - I wondered how my quen duration got so high. On my first playthrough it was already over 1min before I put any points in it. Now I realize it was probably from the moon rune in my sword (it was the only rune I had) and any other miscellaneous +sign buffs I might have on my armor or from special attributes.
Sign damage doesn't translate into Quen time.

You can easily check with Petri's Philtre, which adds sign damage.

Stammelford's Philtre, on the other hand, adds +1 sign intensity, ergo +25s of Quen time.

Quick time events.

You can do quite a lot of combat with the Igni sign...

GrimTuesday: You can do quite a lot of combat with the Igni sign...
Aye, you can even defeat the dragon with it, from what I hear.

A mainly magic-tree build is completely valid, though not as scalable as swordsman in terms of damage.

Igni isn't really as good as it could be.. and in my first play through i upgraded it quiet a lot.
