There is a BIG problem with the save system...

As if not managing the save files and letting them take all of the user's hard drive space wasn't bad enough, the game also repeatedly saves nearly 1 MB size .BMP images along with each of these save files. Can't the game just link these images to a resource file from the game or at least use a smaller sized format like .JPG or .PNG? This is so stupid it pisses me off. We have to manually delete these space hogging save files or use a 3rd party utility to clean them up? Seriously, how inconsiderate!

CD Projekt, I highly recommend you make the game auto clean/manage the save files or at least give the user a warning about the infinite storage use.

BTW: Saves are stored in the My Documents folder.

I've got 788 saves (1576 files) in my saves folder. ;p Yea, it's a lot. yea, it takes up over 7 GBs. Yea, the system could be improved.

But...it's 2011. Is hard drive space even a real issue anymore?

Anyways, until CPR improves the save system, there's a save utility that's been out for a few days. Use it to manage and compress your saves if you wish. Pretty sure the thread is even on the first page of the board.

I can't believe the only improvement since the original Witcher 1 is they let you have a Quick Save that only occupies one slot and overwrites itself. The same thing needs to be done with Autosave and just let players manually save whenever they need to.
I got a new 2TB HD cuz I knew TW2 was coming out! And one extra 1TB HD too.
It's so much faster to manually delete them than doing it through an in game command. Suck it up, this isn't something that's a problem.

I don't find it very troubling either.

As noted, hard drives are huge. As for overwriting AutoSaves, I wouldn't want that as a default. Toggle would be o.k.. They are pretty useful and can be thrown out easily.

What I really wouldn't mind is Quick LOAD to go with Quick Save.

I would like to be able to name my Hard Saves. Since space isn't an issue, I delete all Auto Saves periodically. However, I keep all my Hard Saves. After 3 runs, it is getting more difficult to find specific moments to reload.
I guess they will fix it someday but you have nothing to complain about so far. I don't have too much music on my PC and it weights 10GB. My downloads folder weights 30Gb and I try to clean it once a month. Just delete some kind of junk from your pc and you will have enought space for 100 more hours of savegames.
any fix in 1.3 patch?

TsunamiZ: any fix in 1.3 patch?
We don't have a 1.3 patch changelog, so there's no way to know. The only thing confirmed to be in the upcoming 1.3 patch is 4:3 support.

EDIT: They began compressing saves in patch 1.2, so they take up considerably less space than they used to. It also allows you to delete saves from the menu by hovering over the save and hitting the "delete" key on your keyboard.

My compalint is that i can not label them.

I would like to be able to label them according to what choices i made in the game like Roche path or rescue Anais etc. In the end i have to pare the list down on occasion as i run win 7 off a 64 gb SSD so space on C drive is a premuim. I have a 2 TB drive where all the stuff and games are kept so with the current save system i have to pare the saves down which is not the developer's fault. What is annoying and what i am taking them to task for is i have to guess which saves represent what decisions, and that is trickier than it has to be or should be, and was pointed out as an issue with TW and never addressed.

I too felt the need to label them, I hate when games don't let me name my saves.

Now I just open the .BMP image of the saves with a image software and slap some title on it. Not elegant, but works.

Here an example: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/860/savegame.jpg/
Great workaround. Vote +1 to be able to name saves ingame
Seriously complaining about hard drive space? I can see 5-10 years ago, but now? A 1 tb hard drive can be had for 50 bucks or so, cheap!
