Actually, many people have some measure of patience and do look them over.
I agree that it is a strange choice to have the game load quest items in alchemy though.
There are mods at
http://www.witchernexus.com/index.php , by very patient, thoughtful individuals which deal with this. It is a common mistake, but avoided by more experienced players. (Experienced players have been bitten by it too.)
I like my RPGs to be realistic. Choices have consequences. Inatentativeness has consequences. I let the alchemy mixer eat mine up on first play. Der der der. Didnt' get mad. Got even.
I totally understand wanting games to be an escape from reality, in the sense of lower consequences and high success rate than real life. But that isn't the kind of escape I like from an RPG.
