Well, whatever your friend decides to pick up in the end, make sure it has a newer i7 (they have fairly significant performance boosts over the old i7s). Look for i7 2xxx rather than i7 7xx,8xx,9xx.

In terms of video cards, I would try to aim for a 6970M or its Nvidia equivalent 480-485M. I would probably avoid the 460M because it's considerably less powerful.

charleswang95: I m helping my buddy pick a new PC to play Witcher 2 and other upcomming games. He really wants a laptop, and Alienware recently release their new laptop, M18x. I think it is too much for the game, cause you don't have to have that crazy spec to play the game. Anyone agree? If yes, plz suggest a good laptop. If no, explain thx so much.

cjrgreen: Alienware is generally poor value, and by the time you actually add in the big iron their puffery promises, it's going to cost a lot more than the base price. The 12-pound weight may be an unpleasant surprise for those who actually expect their laptops to be portable :)

The stock M18x ($1999 US) has:
Core i7 2630QM (2.0 GHz)
4GB DDR3-1333
Single 1.5GB GTX 460m (equals desktop GTS 450)
Single 320GB HDD
DVD burner (no Blu-Ray)
11.9 lbs (5.4 kg)

The same bucks ($1949 US) will get you a Sager NP8170 with:
Core i7 2630QM (the same)

Single 2GB 6970m (equals desktop 6850)

Blu-Ray reader/DVD burner
8.6 lbs (3.9 kg)

I'd rather have the better iron and the 50 bucks in my pocket. But I'm funny that way.
I moderate on a PC related forum and that Sager came up some time ago. I was ready to write it off until I checked out the specs and was highly impressed. Not a bad suggestion and I believe you get more bang for your buck with that as well. I also think support is U.S. based.

After reading all the threads I found that Sager NP8170 is the most appreciate. Anyone have a better suggestion than this laptop?

default CPU and GPU of Sager NP8170 gonna max out witcher 2 on ulta? The price is pretty damn good but i doubt the preformance

Not sure about ultra, but the witcher 2 isn't a good game to get your stats based on, since even high end desktop machines are having framerate issues.

My rig, np8662, geforce 260GTX, 4GB RAM, q9200 3Ghz, normally I run games at my native resolution (1680x1050) but on this game i'm playing the game on 720p, getting framerates of 28-40fps, not exactly good in my book, textures and everything else is set to high, ssao/blur/shadows low or disabled.

I can play crysis warhead, crysis 2, bad company 2 on 1680x1050 all medium settings 60fps or higher.

Your gpu is faster than mine and your cpu is also better.

You should be able to at least run witcher 2 at high.

Yeah ASUS have been getting a lot of great reviews latetly. I remember at the time I bought my laptop their G model had severe overheating issues with the 260GTX but it seems to have been resolved a year ago.

Well I talk to my friend about it and he bought the M18x anyway :D max out graphic card and everything~total 4000some bucks. But the Sager laptop got me attention so i decide to buy one for myself. Thanks a lot for all your helps!!! XD
