hey guys, ive been trying to sort this out all night, searched to no avail.

firstly, i had witcher installed to being with, and managed to only get it patched to 1.1, so reinstalled so i can get 1.2 by starting fresh, the install has just finished, and the auto download for 1.1 downloaded and i get an error saying the game version is incorrect or whatever, and thats what the game downloaded automatically, so i assumed it was the correct one.

so now i cant install ANY 1.1 patch.

so i figured, maybe 1.1 managed to install? even though its saying it hasnt, so i thought id go and check the game version, oh i was pleasantly suprised to see that the file version from the witcher2 exe was blank, wonderful.

almost given up, cant even play the game without any patches now because when i run the game i get an error saying "please use the launcher" even when i use the launcher..., if i have to reinstall once again, and in all honesty, im just going to throw this f**king game in the bin before i do that.

any ideas?

i have the retail version i bought from the store in australia, yes i tried installing the 1,1 AU patch, no workies, yes i have let the game download the au one automatically, doesnt work. yes i tried checking the game version, its all blank.

cheers in advance
It happens to me the first time i reinstalled Windows7.. It has to do something with privillige. Change User Account Setting to 'Never Notify' me of changes and restart your PC. IT works for me. IF you are using Windows 7 or XP though.

I wouldn't count on getting around re-installing once more.
You can still try some of that stuff though (just don't put too much hope in it) before going with the "fail-safe" method:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/the_witcher_2/common_solutions_to_problems_with_after_installing_patch_1_2
im thinking, maybe the au patch isnt installing and saying that its the wrong version, because when the patcher checks the game version, there is no version to check because the exe is all blank

Are you using Windows 7? Press Windows->Search for "UAC". And you will see Change User Account Control Settings. Drag the slider all the way down to 'Never Notify'. Restart. It works for me and hope it works for you.
restarted pc

settings were already set to never notify

no changes

i got a strong feeling its because the file version isnt showing for the exe, so when the patchers look for the version number they crash and give the "invalid file version bla bla"

also, out of curiosity, which 1.1 patch am i supposed to use? the AU one? or the international one?

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. After the UAC settings, i reinstall patch 1.1 and it works flawlessly. Shortly later it asked me to update to version 1.2. Are you using GoG version? As i'm using GoG version.

Since you have turned off the UAC, perhaps try reinstalling TW2 as i did that previously as the first time installation it was mentioning about Activation Failed. Reinstall it, apply patch 1.1 and hope it solves your problem.

Have you tried installing it in a custom directory, not in the "program File/Witcher2" one?

Have you tried running the launcher/ Patcher as admin?

When you have installed again the game have you WIPED out the existing game directory? Maybe some old files are preventing the patcher to work properly..

I can't help you furthur, but i hope you solve the problem m8.

Regards.

Yeah forgotten on that too. Installing with administrator rights and UAC turned off. It's a must. Hope it works for him.

i dont exactly know what the GOG version is? is it a downloaded version? if thats the case then no, my copy is the premium copy that i purchased from a store here in australia

the UAC was already set to "never notify" but since you mentioned activation, i have to mention that i didnt activate it when it asked me to, since i read some instructions on patching, it said put anything in the activation code box. should i use my activation code? where do i get my code from?

no, should i try?

now that you mentioned it, the second time i installed the game, i think there may have been some patcher files still in the directory, and some save game files, i didnt delete them, but i have since cleared the folder of everything except my save files, should i delete my save files to (delete the WHOLE directory) ?

I can't help you furthur, but i hope you solve the problem m8.

thanks for the help guys , will try reinstalling with the above info and see how we go.

You can download the patches manually from the witcher website.

Since you have the retail australian version I suggest you locate the retail australian patches.

You are on the GOG forums, and I think some people are confused at what you are saying because the GOG version of the game has a separate patch for 1.1 which isn't the same as the retail 1.1 patch.

Try this:

- Uninstall TW2, then manually delete the Witcher 2 directory in "Program Files" and also make a backup of your savegames and delete "Witcher 2" in "My Documents".

- Download the correct patches frome here:
http://www.en.thewitcher.com/patch/
it should be http://wpc.420c.edgecastcdn.net/00420C/files/Patch0/Patcher_AU.exe (1.1)
and
http://wpc.420c.edgecastcdn.net/00420C/files/Patch2/Patcher_1.2.exe

- Disconnect from the internet

- Disable your antivirus

- Install the game in a custom directory, for example C:\Games\The Witcher2 or whatever you want.

- After you've finished installing the game, start the launcher with admin privileges ("Run as Admin"), start the game, then close the game.

- Launch the 1.1 Patcher as Admin, hoping it works

- Check the version of the game, launch it, exit.

- Launch the 1.2 Patcher as Admin.

- enable again your antivirus software, connecto to the internet (if you want)

- When done, check the setting and wathever, then put back your savegames in the correct directory and (i hope) enjoy the game.

Hope this help mate :(
thanks mate, will try this when i get home!
