I just started the game and am currently near the end of Chapter 1. I want to save Abigail from the villagers, but if I do so, she'll die in the fight against the Beast. If she dies, what will happen to her later in the game? I've heard she's pretty vital in Chapter 4, at least if you choose to save her.

The non-spoiler answer to your question is this: there will always be a way to continue the main quests (and most side quests). Even if you do a very bad job and fail to get things "right", that will just lead you down another path.

Spoiler answer:

If you let Abigail live in Chapter I, she will be around in Chapter IV, and she will help you solve the main quest in a certain way. If you let her die, then you will have to find a different way to solve the quest.

And just FYI, if you save Abigail from the villagers, she lives. The Beast may knock her down, but she'll get up after the fight's over.

Alright, that's what I wanted to know, thanks. :)

Is this also the case with other fights and other NPCs, though?
You mean the thing about NPC's just getting knocked out and not dying from monsters? Sometimes. Main quest characters like Abigail and Siegfried can't die from monsters. Side quest characters like Vesna Hood can get killed.

A good indicator is whether they are "green" or "blue" characters. Greens are immortal (unless a scripted event kills them or allows you to kill them) and blues are mortal.
I see. Thanks!
