Triss seems to take up that rare area of fantasy literature where she manages to be a badass, but still very feminine. It would be better if they spoke more naturally (it's like one sentence is just spoken right after the other without any pause), and it may change since I'm only about an hour or so into the game, but I'm really digging Triss here.

Anyone have any complaints against her, or is she pretty much universally liked as a character?

Keep playing, and remember that while Geralt is a simple swordsman, he is among characters who are much more than they seem.

(Yes, Triss is at least three kinds of awesome. No, some players have good reason for distrusting or disliking her.)

I haven't played much yet, but yes, I'm rather fond of her so far.
Shani is also great. Well, except for her outfit at day.

Shani is so bland compared to Triss for me. Too wholesome. Hahaha.
I don't think it's so much that Shani is bland as that she doesn't seem a good match for Geralt. I think she'd prefer a more settled existence than he is able to offer and ultimately that would create distance/conflict between them.

I just came across Shani and finished the first chapter today. I don't care for her much as a character. With Triss, her personality is so ingrained in everything about her, that if you change her out with anyone else, it genuinely affects the feel of her part of the story. Shani is so bland that you could replace her with anyone and odds are it's only an improvement.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Geralt could relate to this quote from Bill Hicks: "It’s hard to have a relationship in this business, man. It’s gonna take a very special woman … or a bunch of average ones."
Triss is my main (if not the only) complaint in the game. I read the books a long, long time ago - probably in school, and I don't remember much, but my impression of Triss was completely different. I think I remember Yennefer as the "cool" one and Triss as the "nice" one. Now the game's Triss isn't nice at all, plus she's wearing that slutty outfit and her face doesn't look very pleasant to me. Shani isn't very exciting, and I would have prefered to stay a lone witcher, but I think the game didn't give such an option (or did it?), so I ended up with Shani just to keep Triss away. The lesser of two evils =D
So count +1 in the anti-Triss camp.

You are correct; in the books, Yennefer is cool, and Triss is nice. I think Triss is still nice in the game, but her political deals get her into trouble. She's really not ruthless enough for them. Eskel sums her up nicely in the prologue when he explains to Geralt why they won't show Triss the lab: she'd want to use witcher secrets to help people, heal illnesses, etc., but it's never that simple. I agree with you that her costume is atrocious. Fish net and a wide fur collar? Really?

Triss's costume is especially out of character considering she suffered a disfiguring wound at Sodden Hill, such that she said she could never wear a low-cut dress again.

Though I agree she is too concerned for others to be ruthless, you will find her both comfortable and competent at dealing with those in power.

SPOILERS:

I think it does give that option actually... I mean, you have to choose who to leave Alvin with, but after that I don't think you need to pursue either woman. They want a gift as a sign you love them, and you can choose not to give them one. I didn't try this myself, but I assumed it would mean that you don't pursue a serious relationship. There were several other occasions in which I was given an option to "back out" also.
