Everyone hates Arcania because of 3 reasons: Gothic 1, Gothic 2, and to a lesser extent but still - Gothic 3.
And personally I would say that the Gothic games are the closest games to th Witcher that I can think of.

but the reviewers hated it too, and they couldn't have cared less about gothic 1 2 or 3. they reviewed it on it's own merits, and found it to be lacking. it could possibly be that i have not played enough of it yet, but they said the combat was boring, and i found that to be one of the best parts!
There's really nothing quite like The Witcher. You could try Risen, Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga, or Kingdoms of Amalur. Maybe Two Worlds.

There's also games that are similar but party-based like Dragon Age or Drakensang.

And on a lower tier you could try Rise of the Argonauts or The First Templar.

thanks, i've already tried all the games you've listed EXCEPT for these two, i'll look em up. but i just bought a game called borderzone that LOOKED awsome, but nobody had ever played them before or even heard of it, and it turned out to be a stinker.

and another thing, divinity two demo was choppy, and i couldn't get it stop being choppy, so i probably wont get that game even though it looks fun. i like pork chops, lamb chops, and karate chops, but i hate it when my game chops!

If you play Rise of the Argonauts or The First Templar, don't expect to be blown away. But they're a good way to pass the time.

That's strange, since the system requirements aren't all that steep. The Dragon Knight saga gave the whole game a major overhaul, though, even the engine, so it might run better for you than the demo.

I really think it's hard to find anything like the Witcher. I don't mean that there are no other good RPGs, but the Witcher is just unique.
An awful lot of Witcher fans love Planescape: Torment. It's not a whole lot like The Witcher, but it seems to appeal to the same type of person.

$10 here on GOG and a truly wonderful game in many ways. Combat is quite clunky, but the story, dialogues, and creativity are breathtaking. Make sure you follow the sticky for recommended mods if you play it, and make sure you give yourself lots of Wisdom.

planescape torment was awsome, loved it, but i think of baldurs gate, icewind dale, fallout, stuff like that when i think of planescape.

with witcher, i think more of gothic, risen, divinity ego draconis or whatever, fable, kingdoms of amalur.

As I said, the games are NOT very similar, but they tend to be liked by the same people.

Does it have to be a fantasy setting? I'll suggest Alpha Protocol if you're into a spy type setting. The game deserves a helluva lot more credit than it got and I found it a blast to play.

I've never been able to get into PST, and I'm an actual tabletop player/dabbler before anyone accuses me of being a "modern" gamer :P
That said, the closest experience you will get to TW is probably a DM-written tabletop adventure. Possibly Neverwinter Nights may have similar.
This is assuming that you're talking about the parts that for me made it great, namely the story and RPG and world immersion, rather than the technical aspects :)
VAMPIRE - THE MASQUERADE: BLOODLINES

i recommend getting the anthology now that it's out, divinity 2 is great fun (although the combat is kind off... bad) and the game runs at a smooth 70 fps on my pc (and my pc is just below average)
also you can play divine divinity and beyond divinity (the gameplay but i haven't played it enough to make an opinion
