My pc is pretty crappy but I didn't think it couldn't handle the witcher

Specs:

Pentium 4 3Ghz
2 Gb RAM
Geforce 8400 GS 512 mb
windows xp

I put everything on low and it's still horrible, especially the cutscenes. Is it supposed to run like this? I expected it to run at least ok on low settings.

At a glance, I would suspect it's your graphics card (is that DDR2 or DDR3 VRAM?). It's not really designed for gaming (before the GTX series, any nVidia card with a second number of 6,8, or 9 is gaming grade. Others are not. They're more for regular/mainstream/business use). As well, your CPU is just barely at minimum specs for the game. Likely it's just a combination of factors.

I just googled it and it's ddr2.
oh well, guess i should have installed a demo first.
I'm getting pretty decent frame rate (~60fps) running Witcher on a computer that I have around that has similar hardware; the main difference is I have a 9800GT. Try reducing your screen size to 1040x 768 and disabling DOF. If you still don't get framerates over 30fps make sure your MB has is set for the correct protocol (pcie-16 not pcie-1).

Good luck!

I enabled depth of field and it made my cutscenes better. How do I check that motherboard protocol thing? I have no idea what that is.

That's a known issue with The Witcher, glad you got it sorted out. It will only affect cutscenes though, regular gameplay is unaffected.
You cave to catch your computer when it is booting and hit a specific key to look at the BIOS settings. This varies from machine to machine. You are looking for the graphics card slot settings.

This one change on my computer **hardware settings** boosted my fps from from around 15 fps to around 60 fps.The card appeared to be running correctly but was seriously bottle-necked because of the mis-match.
