Can install (and there's an error during install, natch), but can launch the game. However, after selecting Easy or whatever difficulty, get a black screen with 'loading' and then' Kaer Mohain exterior" (or whatever), and it just sits there. Tapping the space bar once or twice kicks back to the desktop

Tried the terminal command mentioned earlier, and got:
sudo WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/wine/prefixes/the-witcher winetricks d3dx9_35

*Never* use sudo with WINE, the only thing you would achieve with this is breaking your game.
By the way, 'winetricks d3dx9_35' is already automatically called by the game on first run if you install it with the ./play.it script, so the issue is probably elsewhere.

My advice is to give a try to Adamhm’s WINE wrapper and see if it works better for you:
The Witcher for Linux
This way we will know if your issue is related to the ./play.it process, or to the game itself.

I'm having an unusual problem and I have opened a topic at gog support but would like to mention it here as well in case it has happened to anyone else and they have discovered a solution for it.
I have tried both the gog installer and the classical installer in Ubuntu wine. Both give this message:
"The source file is corrupted.
You should run the installer's integrity check to verify which files need to be re-downloaded."
There is no integrity check included with the Witcher 1 installer.
I have also tried to run the installer under Win XP virtual box (just in case the problem was related to wine) with the same result.

Gog support answered me promptly telling me I should download the game again using lgog downloader which I have done 3 times with the same results.


Update: My problem was solved by downloading all the files again using Chrome web browser and now the installer is working. Hope this will help someone else in the same situation.

You can give a try to the script downloadable from the first post of this thread, it provides an integrity check.

Je viens d'essayer le script ./play.it (c'est le premier que je teste) et il n'arrive pas à trouver les fichiers de l'installeur qui sont dans le même dossier. En jetant un coup d'œil dedans, je vois que les hashs MD5 sont différents. J'ai ça pour mes fichiers:
- le .exe : 8517c3d670ebc50d0b31c559d2076dbf
- le -1.bin : a77fe33e052fae7751c52c91a8b3dca5
- le -2.bin : ef93716ab66a96c9c98e1ec53cc0eda7
- le -3.bin : 20a0fae2357fce27233ccc3b8675b703

Je suppose qu'il y a eu une màj de l'installeur du côté de GOG et que le script est obsolète ?

En attendant, tu peux lancer le script avec l’option "--checksum=none" pour le forcer à utiliser ta version de l’installateur même si elle n’est pas identiques à celle attendue.

Je viens de télécharger la dernière version de l’installateur pour vérifier, et les sommes de contrôle sont cohérentes avec ce qui est attendu par le script.
Je pense donc qu’il y a bien eu une mise-à-jour silencieuse du côté de GOG, mais c’est ton installateur qui est obsolète, pas le script ;)

Tout a été téléchargé dans la journée : les scripts + le setup de TW1...

Je n'ai pas essayé de l'installer manuellement, je vais le faire, mais c'est assez peu probable que les quatre fichiers aient été corrompus pendant le téléchargement. Je reconfirme ça.

EDIT: en allant revérifier sur la page de TW1 dans mes jeux, je me rends compte que j'ai téléchargé la version qui intègre GOG Galaxy (néanmoins optionnel) et qui est sélectionnée par défaut. C'est vraisemblablement de là que vient la différence de checksum. Après téléchargement du premier fichier de la version "classique", il a l'air de correspondre.

Ça pourrait être utile d'ajouter un avertissement sur les pages de ./play.it si GOG télécharge par défaut la version avec Galaxy, non ?

Bonne idée en effet, vu que chez GOG ils n’ont pas l’air pressé de nous fournir une option pour choisir quel type d’installateur on souhaite se voir proposer par défaut…

Hello! I've tried using these scripts. Running Linux Mint 19.
I managed to install the game after a few hiccups, but every time I try to launch it from console I get this:

wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\winemenubuilder.exe"

And starting it form the menu shortcut doesn't do anything.

It installs DirectX on the first run of the game, after that tho, nothing.
I'd attach images, try to explain the situation more, but that error is literally all that happens.

I've read somewhere that it might be an Ubuntu problem that carries on in Mint...?
