What exactly does Precise hit mean? I know it's a critical hit, just don't know exactly how it's calculated.

It's a dice-roll chance. If you get it high enough, the game will practically rain Salamander heads.

With talents like "Precise Hit +10%", the way it's figured is this:

There's some base percent chance, not documented AFAIK.

Each talent, weapon, potion, or oil increasing it is treated as an add-on percentage. So "Precise Hit +10%" multiplies the base chance by 1.1. These stack, so if you have all three levels of Precise Hit, your chance is Base x 1.1 (PH 1) x 1.1 (PH 2) x 1.15 (PH 3) = Base x 1.3915

Thanks for the explanation, but I really just wanted to know what happens when I do a Precise hit.

I mean do I do more damage, get an instant kill or ignore enemy armor? Or something completely different?

I think it's a large damage bonus, and if you kill an enemy with a precise hit you do an extra-gruesome kill, like beheading a human enemy. But I'm not certain, it could actually be a chance for insta-kill. By the time I had a high precise hit bonus I was already doing a lot of base damage so every precise hit seemed to be a kill.

One-hit kill; if you get a Precise Hit on a humanoid, you usually get a decapitation. Sometimes you get multiple Precise Hits on a single swing. Thus my remark about it raining Salamander heads

Dang.. well thats a game changer! Too bad I'm already in Act IV! LoL I assumed it reduced any "Chance to Miss" rolls...

Well don't feel too bad, I finished the game twice and thought the exact same thing until now... D'oh.

Also it can often be hard to get the group style working... many enemies will dodge / block your first strike, and it will take several attempts to sucessfully initiate a sequence. Sometimes they even interrupt your sequence with a dodge or block.

This is especially so when facing fewer than three fast opponents. It's the only thing that keeps Group style from totally dominating the game.
Are you certain it's an instant kill? Check out this discussion:

I personally suspect that a "precise hit" is an attack that deals the maximum possible damage. IE, if your group damage is 10-20, a "precise hit" roll will do 20 damage regardless of opponent armor. I think it also makes a certain slicing sound effect in game.

That doesn't explain why so many bosses go down at a single blow in Group style. Or why you can drop dead starting from a full health bar, if a Salamander wielding an Illegal Sword gets through to you.

Notwithstanding that discussion, I see too many one-hit kills to think it's only maximum damage.
hm, what difficulty are you playing on? I've not yet seen a boss go down in a single blow, and I have used group style (I've not finished the game yet, though). I've also never been one-hitted by a Salamandra using Illegal Sword. I'm playing on hard; maybe it has a different effect in normal vs hard?

I definitely have seen quite a few one-hit kills using group style, though.

Side note, here's another post from a modder that claims to explain it (which I can't believe is accurate, because it implies a one-hit kill would be impossible...). Unfortunately, you have to view it as a google cache.

EDIT: wait, I can totally believe that's the correct explanation! He claims that the max damage it will do is 50% of opponent's hit points, which would be two swings of the sword, and two swings can happen within a single attack animation...essentially an instant kill.

On Hard.

Yeah, if he's right, you're likely to get one attack and a kill, especially with big buffs to Precise Hit.
