Like title said ^^ I'm getting frequent crashes to desktop since I'm in chapter 1 (had none in introduction), now every 15mn or so, when I'm doing nothing special (just moving usually).

These crashes come with the usual uninformative windows error messages ("unhandled exception in application witcher.exe" or something like that, that seem to be memory allocation or driver related).

I've verified direct x and updated my catalyst drivers, but even with the last version the random ctds continue to happen.

I've also read the witcher forums and found some messages recommanding to delete old saves to reduce ctds, but I haven't seen a difference after doing this.

If someone has another idea...

config :
windows xp
intel corei5
4 gig ram
ati 4870, catalyst drivers (now 11.5,)
dx 9 up to date

Have you tried reducing the graphics settings? I would reduce the resolution and set the graphics settings to a minimum and see if this makes the problem go away. If it helps then try increasing some settings until you find a stable/attractive medium.

Sorry I don't have anything more specific but this has helped me with other games in the past.
How many save flies do you have? The game racks them up quite quickly because quicksaving does not overwrite the previous quicksave. When there are a huge number of save files, the game can start to crash, possibly when trying to autosave. Check your "My Documents/My Games" folder for the Witcher savegames. They have obvious names, and you can back them all up and then delete most of them to improve performance.

You should probably do this periodically.
Before erasing saves a first time I had 7 or 8 saved games I think.

After erasing saves I had 4 or 5 when I re crashed.

I can't say if it really delayed the crash (perhaps this time it happened after 1/2h instead of 15-20mn).

I'll try reducing graphics but I doubt it's the problem as well (was using program defaults so already medium/low quality).
Sounds like it's probably not an issue with savegames... you'd need a lot more than that to cause crashes, probably more like a hundred.

I'm not sure what else could be causing it. You might be able to find help in the official Witcher forums once the site goes back up.
Are you runninv steam in the background? cause i used to get those crashes before i stopped using steam behind it.
I'm not using steam.

Yesterday I succeeded to play 2 hours without crash.

Things that may have had an effect :
- instead of the launcher I now use a direct link to witcher.exe
- I've set to minimum all graphic options involving lights and shadows and removed depth of field
- I always replace auto-saves with real saves in same slot

Or I was just lucky.

Okay. This is still weird though, having graphics set to high if your pc can handle it should not make your pc crash...
Under w7 64b it seem to make it easier to crash when reloading a lot without exiting the game. On the other hand when not reloading/saving at all except for the autosave I have been able to play for hours without trouble. Since i like saving reloading a lot unfortunatly, I cant avoid crashing ^^;.
Its a common issue with the witcher 1 (and many other games for that matter).
The solution is to run in window mode. Use http://gwr.orekaria.com/ to make it fit your monitor perfectly so it looks exactly like full screen while being windowed; this eliminates the crashes and allows you to alt-tab or hit the windows key with impunity, while looking exactly the same as a full screen mode.
Full screen mode is a derelict, a throwback to the 1990s... you "save" 8MB of ram on a 1920x1200 @ 32bit color... and for what? instability and long delays? not worth it

Thanks.

I used windowed mode with your program and had no new crash in 3+ hours of play, despite re-setting graphics to normal and stopping to erase saves, so I think it's the solution.

(or it's reaching chapter two)

I installed this program but what do I do next?

To config:
1. Run GWR
2. Run the witcher.
3. Change witcher to window mode
4. Save settings and exit.
5. alt tab from witcher and select GWR, in GWR select the witcher to activate its recentering..

To play in the future.
1. Run GWR
2. Run witcher.
3. When done playing exit witcher.
4 After witcher is closed, close GWR.
