Between the nightmare of downloading this game with the new and "improved" GOG downloader, and now getting this message error, I am seriously getting peeved with GoG.

I mean, gee, shouldn't they know that this might be a problem? They can include FoxIt, but not the version of DX9 the game uses?

It's a problem with every DX9 game on Windows 7 and Vista.

You always want the latest DX9, not one that got bundled with the game years ago. And you don't want an old DX9 that is bundled with the game installing over the DX9 that's already on your machine.

So the best thing to do is do exactly as described: get DX9 from Microsoft.

That's because you do not get the DLL alone. You must get the entire DirectX 9 package which, among other files, contains the DLL. The links I gave were to the package and its Web-based installer; you can use either, but do not use any other. There is only one file on each page, and it has a big orange DOWNLOAD button next to it. Once you have downloaded the file, just run it. Don't try to unpack it or look inside. "No user-serviceable parts inside".

Do exactly as I described. After you are done, the missing DLL will have been installed to the correct place.

NEVER simply download a DLL from an unofficial source. At best, you will be unable to install it in the correct place. More likely, it will conflict with other files that are installed. Worst case, it will be a trojan, and you will end up having to clean up or reformat your whole system.

I already clicked the big orange button. What is the "correct place?" Where do I have to download it to. I just put it in my download file when it asked me where to put it. Also which filed to I click?

I see; you're using the Offline Installer. That's the hard way.

You can download and unpack it to anywhere you want. I usually use C:\Users\(my name)\Downloads.

Then run the file DXSETUP (if your Windows Explorer shows file suffixes, it will be "DXSETUP.exe".

It will install only the latest files that match your computer and operating system. You don't need to choose.

Not understanding online vs offline to "run it." You mean you need to be online to run the program (therefore play the game). I figured the offline would be superior.

You only need to be online if you downloaded the file from the second link cjrgreen gave you - the web installer.

If you downloaded the file from the first link then you can install it offline.

You do not need to be online to play the game.

Microsoft (and a lot of other software companies) use "Web" or "online" installer to mean a small program that you download and run, then it downloads the (much larger) main installer. (Sort of like the GOG downloader, but a "Web installer" only downloads and installs one thing.)

An "offline" installer is the kind where you download the entire installer. Because you have the entire installer on your disk when you run it, it does not need to be connected to the Internet while it runs.

If you're a system administrator who has to run the installer on a hundred computers on the graveyard shift, offline installers are your friend, because you download them only once and then run them on many computers at the same time.

But most users will be happier with the online installer, which can be much faster (if it can avoid downloading all the pieces you don't need).

Sometimes the Web installer messes up and does not install all the DLLs you need.

If you run the Web installer and it tells you DirectX is already installed, or the error on d3dx9_35.dll continues to come up, use the offline installer.

Well did you try the solution above?
Don't use the web installer if you are on windows 8.1 or 10
Make a new temporary folder on your desktop.
Go here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 And download the June 2010 runtimes to the temporary folder .
Disable your antivirus software.
Then scroll down and run DXSETUP.exe (see pic)
When it says, Installation Complete, you can delete the temporary folder, and re-enable your antivirus software.
