Got this game recently (the first one) and have been having a lot of fun with it... and I like it a lot... when I can play it. :(

I'm getting this constant hard crashing during playing the game. It doesn't seem to be triggered by anything, and none of the workarounds in the sticky have helped so far. Though those were for CTDs and the game hasn't had a CTD once, just a bunch of hard crashes. A BUNCH. It's almost unplayable at this rate.

Any ideas?

Computer has an AMD FX-4100 Processor with 8GBs of RAM, nVidia GeForce 9800 GT graphics card and is running 64-bit Windows 8 Pro.

Some people find that turning off Autosave (in the Options menu) fixes their crashing problems.

Yeah. Read about that. That didn't help either.

I am having the same problem, game just stops working, crashes, then says windows is searching for a solution and will let me know when it finds one. I will try that auto-save fix and see if it helps. I am in the beginning of the game after your leave the Witcher headquarters.

I'm in there too. End of chapter 3, the game has been running fairly solid until now. But suddenly hard crashes that require a power off reboot. This happens even in windowed mode and even if I am alt -tabbed to another program. It resembles a memory leak for sure. Hell of a way to end a game!

My system: Core2 Q8300, 4GB RAM, Geforce GT 230

If you are crashing to desktop, rather than a hard crash (i.e. whole computer reboots), there are several possible solutions listed in the sticky thread, including things like running windowed mode or (a new addition) changing certain sound settings.

@Henius, if you were running fine but now experience crashes, you probably need to delete / move some of your savegames. Quicksaving in The Witcher does not overwrite the old quicksave, it just keeps adding new saves, and when there are too many it can start crashing. Details in the sticky.

Thanks for your reply, but I tried that - removed all saves, tried older ones, tried some savegames supplied from various sites. Reinstall, remove keys in regedit, et,etc. Same result: Boom!

And of cause the problem with hard crashes is that it gets really tiresome the sixth time the fix doesn't work... So I more or less gave up on Witcher, which is a shame as I was thoroughly enjoying myself. Maybe my comp is too old, maybe my fingers emit staic electricity, I dunno, but the problem persists. I think I have to start all over, but what would be the point if the problem pops up again in the new session?

One thing, though: If there is a known issue with savegames being corrupted on a semi - regular basis, why in H** isn't CD making a tool to check the files for faults? It shouldn't be that difficult.

I don't think the issue is with saves becoming corrupt, but just that the game can crash if there are too many save files.

Anyway, I'm sorry that that wasn't your problem... I didn't realize you were having hard crashes instead of crashes to desktop. Hard crashes are harder to diagnose, but they seem to typically come from driver / hardware incompatibilities. I've heard some people have success doing things like disabling fancy sound options on their machines or other similar things. If there's any strange stuff that came with your soundcard / motherboard, you might try turning those off. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the problem could be. It's definitely strange that it didn't kick in until later in the game.
