My motherboard doesn't have integrated graphics..
Well it does, but it doesn't... It has a port attachment for ThunderboltEX
Which ASUS has yet to roll out, So I can't really access the on board Graphics, talk about a crappy situation.
Because if the work around for onboard graphics is the fix, I am up a creek without a paddle....
(The funny thing is the Thunderbolt is an Intel thing, and my board is the first TUF board for the AMD platform and they used the ThunderBoltEX, before they ever rolled it out, and now it's conveniently tied up in Development. side note I think Intel was livid, hence the tie up)

So great! Maybe I can get it to work with me laptop, it's an intel build with Integrated Graphics.

Oedi: funny, now that a have a dual graphics laptop, i can finally reproduce this bug and create a workaround (at least for me) :D

the main problem is that the game isn't able to switch to the external nvidia/radeon graphics chip for this game, i don't know why and we will probably never find out. you will find yourself getting this error on and on: http://abload.de/img/s4errord4q0a.png

to workaround this, i just forced the game to use the intel integrated graphics chip and it works perfectly.

this is what you have to do if you have an intel/nvidia combo (can't say anything about amd/radeon chips but i guess they have a similar option): go to the nvidia system settings and open the settlers 4 profile (you have to manually point the software to your S4_Main.exe if its not showing up).
now you set the preferred gpu to run the application, in our case the intel integrated graphics. accept the changes and you're ready to go.
This is the solution I've used since first installing it. The problem is Intel integrated graphics don't support the 3D Hardware acceleration the game requires so it runs in software mode. But for me the performance is poor. I think GOG would have to patch the game to support newer graphics cards, like they did with Dungeon Keeper 2.

that's odd, my game runs well with intel graphics and hardware mode. ivy bridges HD4000 should be able to do that too, but obviously it dont. cant help you there im afraid.

Right mouse click desktop, choose Configure Switchable Graphics.
Probably you wil see the settlers .exe file under recent applications, if not, add it with the browse button.
By choosing the low performance option you choose in fact to use the intel graphics card. The integrated one, which we want.
But that's not enough to run settlers unfortunately, I searched for hours and found out that the driver version of the Intel graphics card need to be changed.
I say changed because it worked after I set it to last driver. But after reboot it didnt work. So I Choose Update driver, and again it worked.

So my solution works but not clompletely any suggestions are welcome.

I reinstalled windows 7 the other day (had no choice since it started giving me a bluescreen every startup anyways) and now Settlers IV runs without problems.

seems to me like newer amd chips have a problem with the game. can't confirm it though, i only use nvidia cards. maybe try an older catalyst driver?

Tried Compatibility-Modes and deactivating everything in GPU-Settings.

How exactly did you change the driver version of the Intel video card? Where did you find the option to Update the driver?

the intel video drivers are automatically updated by windows update (at least with 8/8.1). if you want to downgrad you have to go to the intel website and search for you cpu. there you can download older driver versions.

I see. Thanks. Guess the onboard card in my laptop isn't Intel, in Speccy it says Radeon 7640G + 7600M

Any idea on how to solve this on a Windows 7 laptop running with intel graphics card. I can seem to find the appropriate menu to change the settings previously discussed on this thread.

Just so you know I was playing the game for an hour before then moved to a different house and then this error message occurred
