Hi,

Just got this game for the second time since i lost it ages ago and just bought it through here. I would love to play with a friend overseas so i guess i have to try that IP thing hopefully that would work. But my main question is where can i get the Viking expansion at? I've been looking everywhere and just cant find it. I already finished this one and don't really feel like doing it again!! any suggestions please??? Also does anyone know if you can maybe play online through GameRange???

Thanks

The official answer would be to get the german one at amazon.de:
http://www.amazon.de/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85Z%C3%95%C3%91&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=siedler+wikinger&sprefix=siedler+w%2Caps%2C133&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asiedler+wikinger

and then use the tools provided in the ubi-forums to install it on the engilsh game, and translate it to english:
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/203258-Vikings-add-on-How-to-Install-Play-on-English-Version?p=1832447&viewfull=1#post1832447

I normally don't advice 'obtaining' it otherwise, but with neither ubi or gog picking up the ball, for now torrent seems the only option for most people.
Is it possible to just use the GOG S2 and the old "Wikinger" CD together?
Think so, at least if you mean the GOG 10th anniversary edition Settlers 2.

The other day I finally managed to install Vikings on Linux. Maybe I shouldn't go into details since, well... But I'm really glad it is finally working, in proper English too, thanks to Darkje's excellent work.

There are some very fine maps here btw: http://www.siedler-maps.de/s2maps/index.htm
Downloaded and played the Westeros map. Unfortunately forgot to up the difficulty on all AIs, so they only had privates, but it was still a hoot to play with a different map, because I pretty much know all the original + Vikings maps by heart.

You may need to go through some of the steps here to install the expansion: http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/203258-Vikings-add-on-How-to-Install-Play-on-English-Version?p=1832447&viewfull=1#post1832447

Please go into detail ;)

I just bought GOG 10th anniversary edition of settlers (I own it on CD in German, but I like DRM free).

Now I want to:
- install the GOG version
- change it to german
- install the Vikings addon (from CD)
...and all that under Linux ;)

I think all of that should work, but you may need to follow some of the steps in the guide to get the expansion to install, since the game is in English and the expansion in German. It's well laid out in the guide I linked too, though I suppose you may want to have the entire game in German instead of English? Assuming your "location" is correct.

I installed the game using PlayOnLinux, which is a wine frontend. The base game itself worked fine after that, but I had some issues with the expansion. Since you have it on CD, I assume it should be fine. But you may need to change the language in the registry, as I'm not sure if the expansion will install without it.

I'm attaching two pictures that hopefully show it. 1033 under language means English. You may need to change this registry setting to 1031 (for German) before installing the Wikinger expansion. Other than that, I think you should be fine (but please refer to the guide by Darkje, I prefer to use the manual routine). I installed the base game a while back, but I think the install script from PlayOnLinux worked without a flaw.

To run an .exe file under wine/PlayOnLinux, like the file from Darkje to turn the expansion into English (if you should want that), you can run it from PlayOnLinux under Configure (Settlers 2) -> Miscellaneous -> Run a Windows Executable...

I do this from time to time with various games, and it usually works fine.

Hopefully this helps, but if not then I'll try to help further, and if you are lucky then Darkje will spot the Batsignal and show up =) :D

edit: About changing it to German. I'm not sure how to do this as I've not done it, but I think the Vikings expansion may do this by itself. You can at least try and see if it works, but otherwise I see there is a thread in here about German language, so that might work as well.

Did you manage to sort it out?

I've been playing some of the user created maps from here recently: http://www.siedler-maps.de/s2maps/index.htm
Some of them are fun and different from the campaigns. Many maps are pretty big too, which can make things a little tedious at times. And most of the descriptions are in German. My German isn't as good as it once was, but playing the maps is straightforward enough.

I wonder if any of them have subgoals and such, as in Vikings campaign, does anybody know?

I'm not sure about the sub-goals, but I guess most of them were created for the original s2-10th game, and as you know the sub-goals only came with the vikings expansion. I thought you could setup goals with the editor, but checked the editor now, looking at some of the campaign maps, but I don't see any way to script :(

having said that, I will be the first one to admit that the sub-goals are a nice idea but don't really matter, because in the end it all boils down to the same: wipe the opponent off the map ;).

True, in the end it all comes down to whacking them over the head :) But the subgoals are still good fun, at least some of them.

Looking at the files, the addon maps have additional .lua files, so I suppose these might contain the scripting for the subgoals. Unfortunately I just get jibberish when opening them in a text editor, so I don't know how to do this for user created maps.

All the game files are packed with DnGEd, that's why they look like they do. If you want to look at the lua files unpacked, I've got the unpacker for you at https://mega.nz/#!0ZQXkbYI!I30og3-H8RdsLcskuOhjGTCjAdlbDdKzaKcPbd6lHhE but be aware some AV programs will flag it as bad, so you must exclude it from detection. That's also the reason the rar has a password on it. I used this for the vikings translations too. It's a simple commandline tool, dnged <filename> will unpack it, doing the same again will pack it back.

edit:
I looked at the unpacked lua for campaign02, and yes I do see some familliar stuff in there refering to the texts I translated for vikings_english. also it looks like it's setting up starting condions, like what buildings are available, and the subgoal... so yeah they key must be in those lua files. here is a snapshot of it: http://imgur.com/UXoxlo3

Thanks for that. I'm on Linux, so unfortunately it didn't work on my end. Tried to run it in a few ways, but neither appears to work, as the .lua file doesn't change.

Going by your picture, it sure looks like these .lua files contain the scripting needed for subgoals and various limitations, but given we need this dnged program to compile and decompile scripts, it's not exactly very accessible to make user maps of that kind. Lots of work for little gain. I liked this addition to the Vikings maps, however, so wondered if there were any user maps like that too. There probably isn't.

But some of them are quite fun and challenging. Was playing the Gestrandet map yesterday, and initially getting my arse handed to me, attacked from three directions. But managed to hold on - just - and am now on the last stretch. For others who have played the campaigns several times, it might be fun to take a look at some of the user created maps, as they are well made and interesting to play. I think some are way too big, but that just means I look for the smaller ones.

About DnGEd, I thought about fixing some spelling errors in the English file, but it's no big deal. I do wish the Vikings expansion would be available here on GOG, but I guess it's a complicated matter, particularly since it wasn't originally released in English and GOG prefer to have everything in English (plus others).

You can tell me about the spelling errors in the english version, I'll update the vikings english files then ;) because it was me that made them ... I also told GOG they can have my translation for free if they wanted it, but I guess it's more of a copyright issue than anything else.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I've played through the Vikings campaign again, which was fun.

There aren't that many spelling errors, and it's minor stuff. were/where errors, questionable punctuation at times, missing apostrophes, that kind of thing. Very minor things that probably isn't worth another update, I just notice it because I'm a bit of a spelling nazi =)

Would be great if your English translation could be used by GOG, and the Vikings expansion added, but it's probably tricky legally. It's a very fine expansion, though, so would be a great fit here, and it's not easy to obtain legally otherwise. It deserves a bigger audience.
:) Thanks man.
English is not my native language and it was a single person efford to translate it from German witch isn't my native tongue either, while trying to stay true to the original story. In the German version there are some word pranks, I've tried to keep as well as I could, but maybe it became a bit weird from that. I'm also sure there are some errors, so I'd be pleased if someone like you that is a 'spelling nazi ;)' went over it and corrected me, but if you think it's fine like this, I'm happy to let it be too.

If you feel you would like to do it just to make the translation even better, I can give you a transcript in the form of word document, you can correct and i'll use to do that update sometime this winter.

I, like you think that it's a shame that Vikings is not included or available. The original campaign is nice, but a bit short and adding Vikings would have made a good extra.

I have no idea why UBI never released an English version, I know they planned for it but somehow it got cancelled. I know GOG basically just releases English games, so they probably don't want to release the German addon. I've got no idea if UBI even wants to re-release it though GOG or in any other way. I think either of them would sell some copies if they made a downloadable version available. Then again, what would be a fair price? I feel a couple of euro's or a free giveaway maybe, so I don't know if thats worth any efford from anyone anymore... but it is a shame. If I were UBI i would just put it on my website as being free legacy software, for people that already have the basic game.
Greetings! :)

I have a russian version of the vikings expansion. How can I translate it to english? (I guess i have to set it to ru instead of "de", but what is the code? (instead of 1031) (in regedit)?

I found it : 1049 -> RUssian.
