Hello,

since all other Settler games seem to be compatible with Windows 8, but Settlers 4 seems to be only supported up to Win 7, I wonder if S4 really does not run on Windows 8?

If it does not run, will it ever run on Win 8 (e.g. because of an update by GOG, who simply did not work on it yet)?

Regards

cossi

I checked if it launches fine and played a bit, and it works for me. Performance is better in software mode though (you can change graphic options once in game), but there's almost no difference from hardware mode (it even looks better in my opinion). So, apart from this, everything is fine at the moment.
Not solved.... That's just erroneous. I downloaded it, and all I get are fatal exceptions and Software and Hardware 3D graphics error messages... Running Windows 8 Pro 64bit
Well, he was asking about 8.1, so maybe the game somehow works there(I am no Windows 8 user myself, but I've read plenty of people saying that it didn't work out of the box).

If you keep having problems with it, johncrabtree, I could try installing the game on my mother's computer, which runs W 8.1, in order to confirm if the problem was solved there. If not, maybe I could try to replicate the error and solve it. If I would succeed, I'd tell you the steps!
This issue is NOT solved at all

Using windows 8.1 x64

Also getting the Software and Hardware 3D graphics error
Compatability mode will not work, and installing a virtualmachine is a little over the top

Been searching the internet for ages now and not 1 solution so far

On my windows 7 machine ( also x64 ) it runs fine however... but it will not detect the hardware on Windows 8.1
if you are on a laptop, have you tried this? http://www.gog.com/forum/the_settlers_series/settlers_iv_3d_initialisation_error/post30

i think the main reason the game runs so badly at many systems is tied to newer GPUs/drivers than it is to the windows version, as Settlers 4 is based on DirectX 7. For the past years, Nvidia and AMD/ATI removed a lot of older DirectX Code from their drivers (especially code that was just implemented for specific games) and because of that, many older games with directX 7 or lower wont run on directX 10/11 Hardware as they did on older hardware.

besides that, it would be very kind if you told us your system specs and not just the operating system.
Have the same problem. Cant launch it with Windows 8.1 x64
Getting the Software and Hardware 3D graphics error too
We need a patch to run this game
On a side note: I may give S IV a shot under Windows 10 if I feel brave enough to run that OS again(last time it crashed, as it was REALLY unstable and on a very early stage, it cause medium damage to the entire system. :P ).

As it is basically(atm at least, I am talking about the"Technical Preview"here) a modified version of Win 8, it would be very interesting to see if it works on it or not.
I have a solution that worked for me which can hopefully work for you guys too, if you go to www(dot)williamfeely(dot)info/wiki/DXGL and download the latest version, then launch the configuration and add S4.exe to it and leave it on default settings it worked for me, if you notice the ground is black, just go to video settings in game and hit "Software" for the texture settings and they should pop up again. I really hope this helps!
DXGL worked for my Win7 VM, thanks.

Though changing the screen resolution to to 800 x 600 made things go black and I had to reboot the VM to get control back. Fortunately I could change back to the higher rez without problems.

Any ideas how to make the mouse scroll slower? It is almost impossible to move the map as it is.

I see a "border scrolling" option under the mouse options, but it is dimmed in the first tutorial.

I know this is a old thread, but I got Settlers 4 working under Windows 10!
First I set s4.exe to windows xp SP2 compatibility mode and ran s4.exe as an administrator.
Then I downloaded DXGL and added the s4.exe to it.
Afterwards S4 would start.

might have to dummy this solution down for us novices. I guess I will have to find a different game to play.

Settlers IV works for me using DXGL in Windows 10 x64.

Caution executable to setup in DXGL is S4_main.exe which can be found in exe directory, and not the S4.exe one in the base directory.
