For those interested, I'm the developer of the map generator available here on gog. If you have any question, suggestion or feedback I'd be glad to hear it. Depending on how much time I have on my hands I may do some new features, although I don't believe I have the time to develop it to generate fully playable maps.
Hey, I haven't checked it out yet to be honest but I'm doing that as soon as possible. :) Anyway, thanks for effort.
I've started working on an improved map generator. My current results are pretty good: instead of creating a flat map with some randomization, I now can get real mountains, valleys etc.
I guess tomorrow I'll see if I can get myself to do the actual painting of the map with grasslands, mountains, swamps, beaches, deserts etc., this far I've only worked on elevation levels.
For technical differences, the current map generator places random dots on the map and then spread the dots around by frequency of dots nearby with randomness until a wanted landmass was achieved. The new code instead paints elevations starting with some dots just like before, but mimics the game's map editor's behavior. The end result gives maps that are just as awesome as with the current map generator, but which have far better variety when it comes to mountains and such.
Later on I have to see if I get myself to replicate hut behavior (what size of house can be built on each spot if any), then randomization of forests, animals, fishing waters, intelligent placing of headquarters, minerals, granite... maybe even harbors. Basically get the whole thing done with just the map generator.
I also have a special plan: pasting of images from your favorite graphics program via clipboard, which in turn are turned into maps.
Edit!
I have now added some settings that can customize the end result a great deal from small to big, tight to loose... pretty much after playing around with the settings you know what kind of maps you get with each setting :)

When we have buy the game, how can we know if there is a new version of the map generator or patch to correct bug for the game (i ask the question because i see the option in contact "feed-back, report problem" ? Can you add-on the number version of this map generator please ? 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc... Thanks
The current version of the map generator is 0.91 (Help > About) and it is the last one, because I haven't found the source code for it yet. The new program will use a different name. At the moment I do not know whether the new program will become available on GOG.com, because I'm not a staff member. I'm simply a 3rd party developer and I gave permission to GOG.com to deliver the map generator as a free bonus material.
This topic will get updates on map generator status.
Ah ok !! Thanks for the explanation :oD

In case you haven't read the documentation included, the map generator only does the most basic landscaping. Thus you generate a map, maybe give it a name and save it to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Settlers 2 Gold\WORLDS\ (if you use Vista or Windows 7 you have to add writing permissions, or start the map generator with admin privileges)
After that you can use the Map Editor that comes with the game to add what is missing. Even if this seems like it isn't a lot, it really speeds up map creation. If you just open the Map Editor and start work from scratch you'll soon notice it takes an Age to just get the basic layout done. I'd say using the Map Generator at least halves the time spent on making a map.
Ok, then i missunderstood, i thought this was a complete alternative to the editor providet with the game...
I see then, yeah its a great program, saves up alot of time.
thanks;)
eh i dont seem to find the map editor that comes with the game...

Strange, it should have a shortcut in your start menu just like the game itself.

Erm, I saved it to WORLDS folder like you said but how to load the map in S2?

I believe it is: unlimited play -> scenario -> own maps -> select which one you want.

Thanks but I realised I need to open Map Editor first :)
Yeah, you'll need to finish the map on your own. The main purpose of the map generator is to make it much easier to do maps: most often you spent an awful lot of time making a landmass. For some reason a lot of people end up with very dull maps, like flat grass only... so this is where map generator makes life easier. Just generate a landmass you like and then start working on it.
The generator could do more, but as I've probably said before, that depends entirely on whether I have the interest vs. time to do it. Anyway, some improvements could include a better support for GOG version of the game, such as autodetection of the correct folders.
