This game The Quest looks interesting to me as I grew up on old school turn based crpg games like Bard's Tale and Might and Magic, and I see it's currently on sale along with it's DLC. That part is straightforward to me. What I'm having a little trouble with are all of the expansions that are available on Steam but not here. Looking there and on other websites, I think I've pieced together the following, but I'm not certain and would love for someone to explain it to me if possible. This game was originally designed and implemented on hand held devices. Eventually the developer created a port to PC. A different developer created expansions for the game, apparently a whole bunch of them that fans have enjoyed. The expansions developer eventually put their expansions for sale on Steam, but has stated they cannot do the same on GOG due to GOG not having something akin to the Steam Workshop. However, I saw where it has been stated that if you buy the expansions on Steam and place them in the correct folders of your installed GOG version of the game, they will still work.

Phew, I know that's a lot, but I am curious and wasn't quite sure I was following the "history" of the game correctly. Any assistance from the community in explaining all this to me is appreciated, thanks!
Hi!

You got it right, more or less. :)

The Quest was originally released for old handheld PDAs (like Palm). It was our next game after Legacy which was released on those platforms. Catacomber was a big fan of ours and even helped in The Quest with English text. She (with help from other people) started creating expansions for that original game. Because of our close relationship, we worked together and agreed to release those expansions "oficially". (I don't remember the details because at that time I was only responsible for the graphics engine. We had another programmer who created the game and editor. Since then he has left and I took over all programming tasks.)

Later we updated the game (mainly with much better new graphics and improved sound but there are some other changes too). It was released on Steam and because Steam has the Workshop I made it so that expansions could be released through that. It's quite involved for us to release an expansion but on Steam our involvement is much less so that's a win-win.

That's the short version. :)

The main point is that even though Catacomber's expansions are released by us on some platforms because of historical reasons, they are entirely their own thing and not connected to The Quest's story and world. They are something extra for those who want them.

What I've written on our site is true, the expansions bought (and downloaded) from the Steam Workshop can be used with the GOG version. However I don't think you can buy them without buying The Quest on Steam.

If you are really interested in them, I recommend buying The Quest on Steam. But if you buy here on GOG, I don't think you'll be disappointed. ;) The Quest and our expansion, Islands of Ice and Fire, will provide a lot of gameplay.

Thank you for the reply, I greatly appreciate it! At this point in time I only purchase games on GOG, and I'm happy to say I've added The Quest and the Islands of Ice and Fire DLC to my collection here. I'm looking forward to delving into them soon!

I would also like to add I am happy to see the achievements available for the game on GOG Galaxy. Often developers will add them for Steam but not GOG. For those of us who chase achievements as an additional way to enjoy our games, this is always appreciated!

will there be a giveaway on steam for the quest someday to get the steam version for free?

because having to pay twice for ONE GAME, just to have the ability to get 3rd party and user expansions, is NOT acceptable!!!

Not likely.

We are sorry you didn't have the best experience. We'll strive to be better in our future games.

do you have the possibility of giving steam keys to users who purchased the quest on gog?
this might be a solution for that gog missing steam workshop problem.

if i understand that correctly, only base game is needed on steam platform for access to workshop.

can both versions of the quest (gog and steam) be installed simultaneously on the same computer?
as far i know steam games must be installed in order to be able to download their workshop content.

I don't know how it would work but if you can prove you bought the game on GOG, I can give you a Steam key, yes. Just email us (our address can be found on our site: redshift.hu.)

Both the Steam and GOG versions of the game can be installed simultaneously.
thank you, i just sent an email with screenshot showing the quest in my gog library.

and how do i unrate this post i rated by accidently clicking on that "+" while searching for a report or spam button?

Unfortunately the only way to report spam/bots is via the spambot_report_thread in the main forum - https://www.gog.com/forum/general/spambot_report_thread

Even when you do report it the GOG mods do nothing about it :(

If you click the + button it means that you've 'liked' the post and to make matters worse, there's no way you can undo this any longer. GOG, in its infinite wisdom, deemed this a good idea :(
I've reported the spam soon after it appeared. It's unfortunate that nothing has been done about it. :(

This is par for the course these days with the GOG forum moderators (and by association GOG the company too), they just don't seem to care and so do nothing :(
