I was able to get to the well & when I click on the rope where it says "use" I end up inside the well, however, I can't climb down. If I click the mouse button I use to walk forward, it takes me back outside the well again. Am I missing something? I'm at about 85% achievement, so I've gotten through most of the game. This baffles me.

You need to use the "S" button to climb down. (depending on how your controls are set up--that's the default) And then the "W" key to climb back up.
