I am curious about what has been done to upgrade this game, because of the current computer specs given for a game that came out in 84 programed in basic to run on 64 meg machines seem tremendously high,

This is a remake of the original. And if it were a DOS game, GOG would be using DOSBox to emulate, which also has some high requirements.

don2712, why the hell do you put up a review of the original game and not the remake? It is this kind of thing that makes reviews on GOG virtually worthless.

to Petrus Octavianus, I last played this game over 30 years ago and if you bothered not only to read but, to understand what was written it was made very clear that my comment was just a general recall of my views then of the general feel of the game it was not intended to more than a basic note with some nostalga thrown in stating that I considered it good then. The graphics in the screen shots are exactly the same as the original albeit adjusted to work on modern machines. As no one else had placed a review the intension was to be as helpful as posible because I had played the original and remember, remake does not always involve massive changes to plot and style of play it had to be remade bacause it was written before dos
If you don't like my review write your own, I promise I won't be so childishly rude when you do.
Many reviews on GOG are either based on nostalga by people having played the original version or ardent fans of that type of game. So, perhaps you had better write to everyone who has posted those types of review and tell them just how worthless you think their reviews are or, maybe you have already.
This is a gaming COMMUNITY where people try to be of assistance to others however worthless some others may consider their efforts however, most will just press the not helpful button at the bottom and carry on with their lives.
Better question: Hasn't there been a (considerably nicer looking) freeware remake of Lords of Midnight floating around online for over a decade?

Fair enough. Your review will be helpful to those completely new to LoM, but not so much for old hands like me who is more interested in the differences between the old and the new versions.

Yes, it's called The Midnight Engine.

And in essence, this is the midnight engine brought up to date. I discontinued work on TME. This version also fixes issue with game logic in TME and will allow for the actual releas of Doomdark's Revenge.

Specs are purely down to the high resolution graphics and the use of 3d hardware to draw the graphics, nothing else. Even though the data is and code take up more space than the original, just because of architecture differences etc... The majority of the space is used for the 32 bit graphics. Space could have been reduced had I been able to code some real time SVG type routines - but I couldn't.

Thank you for the information, I am looking forward to playing the game again.
