I just noticed that The Longest Journey has been updated to installer version 2 not so long ago (somewhere between mid-September and today). Surprisingly the installer's size has gone up by whoppin' 500 megabytes from the previous version (previous installer was 1,128,108 KB, new one is 1,616,216 KB). Does anybody know whether this is some major update? Like maybe a swap from a CD-ROM release to a DVD release with higher resolution cutscenes or something? Or maybe added languages? I'm pretty positive that there was no update flag so I'm rather surprised.

I didn't notice an update flag either.

Well I don't know the difference between the CD-ROM or DVD versions, but the new installer comes with a new launcher that offers some options for graphics such as high quality 3D Models and enable 3D Acceleration, a section for advanced settings offering a couple of buffer choices and audio tweaks.

I've only messed with it a little, but I didn't notice any difference in quality between this release and the old. In Windows 8, the exit menu still appears as a white box.

Funcom's intro video is different, if that counts for anything. There is also now a selection for High Quality Video in the in game settings.

Frankly I don't know if there were different retail versions with higher quality video on DVD, it's only something that came to mind as there's numerous other games where that's the case.

Okay, the updated logo pretty much means that the developers have actually made updates to the digital version themselves and I guess it's possible that they have newly encoded or even newly rendered the cutscenes. Will definitely take a look myself when I find the time.
On that note for those who might be interested.

Enabling 3D Acceleration seems works with my Nvidia card selected as my preferred graphics processor in the control panel (customized settings for game.exe), whereas before I was unable to get it to work. I am able to use anti-aliasing, which is a big improvement.

Some settings caused the game to run at an unplayable crawl, but what I have it set on now works good, though some may be unnecessary:

I have a GeForce GTX 670

Anisotropic Filtering - 4x
Antialiasing-FXAA - On
Antialiasing-Gamma correction - On
AAntialiasing-Mode - Enhance the application setting
Antialiasing-Setting - 4x
Texture filtering-Anisotropic sample Optimization - On
Texture filtering-Negative LOD bias - Clamp
Texture filtering-Quality - High Quality
Texture filtering-Trilinear optimization - On

Edit: One of the above settings was causing a crash after the cutscene before the start of chapter one.

Revised settings:

Anisotropic Filtering - 4x
Antialiasing-FXAA - On
Antialiasing-Gamma correction - On
AAntialiasing-Mode - Enhance the application setting
Antialiasing-Setting - 4x
Texture filtering-Quality - High Quality

Everthing else is on its default setting.

It appears that games with the version 1 installers are being updated to version 2. Just now noticed the Bloodrayne games are now listed with the 2.0.0 version.

I remember buying the original cd version which installed okay & other people purchased the dvd version which contained star force drivers which wouldn't install on win 7. I only puchased gog version when I couldn't get it to run on 64 bit. I wish gog would tell you when they have upgraded the version.

Yeah, that's been going on since they introduced installer version 2 (someone from GOG staff has confirmed that they will even update installers for games which aren't for sale anymore). Anyway, it's known that a simple installer update does not get an update flag since normally it is of no relevance to the game itself but well, 500 megabytes is definitely more than just an installer upgrade.

Yeah, I'm still hoping for Judas to turn up here and clarify things. He does post stickies for updates of many other games after all.

I re- downloaded the version 2 installer & it was infact smaller that the version I originally had. 3.43 gb & the installer that I had copied to a dvd disk was 4.17gb.

I think you confused the games. I meant the original The Longest Journey, not Dreamfall (which is indeed 3.4 gb according to the store page - I don't have it myself, though).

all the downloads seem to be version 2 now. I have the cd's of the longest journey which was unable to run even on xp so I purchased the dvd which runs on later systems. maybe thats what gog did changed the installer to the dvd version.

Not all. The vast majority is version 2 by now but there's still quite a few games missing.

Yeah, that's what I also presume.
