There are no known ways (if you can help...) to play decently this game on Linux.

wine up to version 1.3.8 (newest at time of writing) cannot display 3d models, so the characters are almost invisible. Moreover you cannot leave normally because the game hangs instead of showing the `are you to to quit?' dialog.

I noticed few gogmix with considerations about game playability in Linux, but since every customer has a different taste there cannot be a comprehensive list.
So I though, what about sharing Linux experience in the game related forum?
I'm a linux user, and I hope I can play this game under linux, currently I have a XP virtualbox for game playing...
I would say your best bet is to use a VM. Until http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11819 is solved (very unlikely, this bug report is quite old), WINE will not be able to run the game properly.
I've tested Longest Journey with CrossOver Games and no cigar there. The best I've gotten are transparent characters. If you have CrossOver you can vote for this app to get higher ranking. Codeweavers (the company) does it's development on wine directly so if the game gets fixed by them it will be on their product and wine too.

I have CrossOver 10, but no luck either. And since my support expired, I cannot vote anymore.
That's sad, it's the first game brought here that I cannot get to run, who would have thought it would be an adventure game ;)

I used one of my votes for this game for you. Hopefully it will make a difference.
Many thanks for that :)
It seems some work is ongoing on Wine to fix TLJ issues...

Hello, just passing to confirm that it runs pretty close to perfect on a Windows XP virtual machine (VirtualBox, in my case). I made a post on VirtualBox forum describing some tweaks to make it run better and thought I would post the link here in case you guys are interested:

Hope it helps!
That is indeed very helpful. I was, in fact, here specificly to ask about playability in a VM for exactly the purpose of playing in Linux. thanks!
