I've been dealing with game crashes since I decided to play this game a few weeks ago. I've tried everything recommneded in the threads including re-boot, re-install, lowering the setting to the lowest possible. I have a pretty good computer (Dell XPS 8500 i7 8GB RAM dual core) only a few years old and a decent graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 7500 series).

The most recent freeze has been happening in Chapter 2 on the boat scene with Queenie. Every time I play the dialogue choices, it freezes after i choose a decision. I'm about to give up on this game which is upsetting since I've been a long time fan of the Longest Journey trilogy. And yes, I've waited years to play this. All these game crashes are truly making it a frustrating experience when it's supposed to be fun.

Any tips I may have not tried yet would be appreciated. I've looked at the Red Thread forum and support page, submitted my issues to them too. I 've tried some of their tips to no avail and I have yet to receive a response.

Thanks!

1 What is your OS (Windows 7, 10, Linux? ) and is it 64bit or 32bit? There was a memory issue with 32bit systems that was causing crashes, and afaik, 32bit systems was never their main testing platform.

2 Does the game crash to desktop or freeze (or does either randomly)?

3 Can you check what the output log file contents are (output_log.txt in Windows, Player.log in linux) after the game has crashed? Maybe it indicates a reason.

4 Do you have enough free space in your HDD?

5 (this is just a guess and the game could be fine with it) Do you have non ASCII characters in the paths for the save games?

Furthermore, this may be unrelated to your problem, but I used to have a Radeon HD 7900 series and my experience with Dreamfall Chapters in Linux and Windows was not ideal. Especially in Linux the game was filled with artifacts and that was very annoying and distracting, and additionally the visuals were quite lower and different than the ones in Winodws in the same PC. On Windows 10 I used to get random freezes, but it turned out that it was an issue with my GPU card and Windows 10 in general (and AMDs bad driver support for my card) and not specific to the game.

I also got the feeling that RTG's main testing setup was with Nvidia GPU cards (and Intel CPUs) and so the AMD GPU bugs (especially with old generation cards) were difficult to reproduce and they were not being prioritized. This goes double for Linux issues. But at least, in the early days RTG people were very responsive in their own forums, and also over at Steam forums.

It freezes during the dialogue choice scene in Chapter 2 w/ Queenie on the boat.

3 Can you check what the output log file contents are (output_log.txt in Windows, Player.log in linux) after the game has crashed? Maybe it indicates a reason.

I'm not savvy with the programming language but it stated an issue with Unity program being addressed in a later update.

4 Do you have enough free space in your HDD?

I have at least a terabyte so memory shouldn't be an issue. 8GB RAM

The support from the game programmers at Red Thread have not responded to my issue and it seems tech support is almost nil. I'm hoping this is not a lost cause since i only just started the game and would hate to just scrap it. :(

I think your best bet is to write on their official forums in the support section. Although there is not much movement there these days, there are people (other members) who might be able to help you.

This is the most appropriate section to post there:
http://redthreadgames.com/forum/forum/30-dreamfall-chapters-community-help/
Although they also have another section for general support where people post DC issues
http://redthreadgames.com/forum/forum/15-general-support/

Also, supposedly there is an updated version of the game coming at some point for the PC -- that will be closer to the "Final Cut" released for the consoles last month, though RTG has not really said much about it or when to expect it, yet.
