Hey guys,
I have really choppy performance with TLJ, really unsure why. If I turn on Supersampling with NHancer, it eliminates the chopping, but it also removes essential graphics from the game (as illustrated in another thread.)
I'm running Forceware 190.62 drivers.
If I need to provide any other info, please let me know.
Thanks!

Have you tried adding this to the preferences.ini file
[DirectX]
bool_UseHardware=0
The .ini in question is not the one on the game folder but the one on the AppData directory.

Where in the AppData folder is it?

In Win7 and i'm guessing Vista aswell is in
C:\users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\The Longest Journey.

Just tried that, didn't help. The choppiness starts right after the Chapter 1 video.

Ok, then you should probably delete those two lines from the ini file if you haven't yet.
A couplr of things you could try:
-Compatibility mode, maybe win98
-Ingame options, Disabling high quality videos
-Ingame options, Disabling the High Quality April model

Tried all of those, didn't work either. It's pretty strange.
It advances like five frames every two seconds, it's pretty much unplayable.

Do you have anything running in the background ? Xfire or something like that ?
Also, some people seem to be having problems with drivers above 190.38
That's what i have (190.38) and TLJ runs great. Naturally downgrading drivers is always an extreme solution and i'll leave that one up to you, specially because it's not a sure fix for your problem and it's always a PITA.
I guess you could also try my first fix suggestion combined with windowed mode just to see if it makes any difference.
In the same ini file (NOT the one in the game folder, the one in the AppData directory), add the lines:
[DirectX]
bool_StartFullscreen=0
bool_UseHardware=0
If it doesn't work delete the lines...
In your nivida control panel have you set any settings to be used universally on all games like antialiasing or vsync? If so try changing them all to application controlled, I believe antialiasing above 4x with the longest journey can cause alot of lag in game.
Just as Ralackk said, The longest journey doesn't support antialiasing and it will cause choppy performance. For some removing it has removed the problem. The new nVidia drivers cause a huge performance problem with TLJ and just like Namur said, you must turn off hardware 3D to avoid it. There are some problems with it though. Firstly, it requires you to run the game in window mode. Secondly, it uses huge amount of cpu power and can cause the game to run a bit slower than usual.
I'm having this same problem and
bool_StartFullscreen=0
bool_UseHardware=0
fixed it but the resolution it runs on causes the window it runs on to be a bit too small to be very playable imo.
Locate configure.exe in the game directory, it allows you to toggle between 'Force single buffer' and 'Force 16bit mode' and having both enabled fixed the game on my iMac running an ATi Radeon 4850 HD. Not sure if it will help nVidia users though. It also let's you force 'Disable shadows'.
I'm running with full AA and it looks great on my 24".

Yeah, the preferences.ini file edit worked. But you're right, the window is really, really small. I'll play in it for now, and hope the next driver release does something.
Thanks for the help, guys.

I somehow got it working in fullscreen too. I'm not sure what I did, but it seems like enabling "force single buffer" lets you use fullscreen while not using the hardware 3D.
FWIW,
How I got it to work (in Windows 7):
Opened Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accesories)
in Notepad:
File->Open C:\Users\<username here>\Appdata\Roaming\The Longest Journey\Preferences.ini
After the line:
[DirectX]
added the line:
bool_UseHardware=0
(if the line [DirectX] isn't there, add it first!)
I just upgraded my drivers to try and fix a couple texture problems, and now I'm encountering this. I went from what was a mild annoyance to an unplayable mess...
Does anyone know where this preferences.ini file would be on a Windows XP?
Edit: Nevermind, after reading some other topics, I managed to find where the folder was, and adding bool_UseHardware=0 fixed the problem. That'll teach me to not read all the topics before posting.
