Hi, all

I am running the game from my 10 years old CD version in a ULV laptop (ASUS UL30A) and it works quite well, without graphics problems of any sort. However, when there is a conversation with background music (e.g. the intro sequence) the game stutters quite frequently, some times for up to 5 seconds.
I have played with the audio buffer options, but the problem never goes away entirely.

The question is: has people found this issue in similar systems with the GOG version? I'm on the fence already, because I'd rather play the game in English, and if the sound issues were fixed I'd jump over in seconds.

Thanks!
Hey,

I hope you haven't bought the game - I got my GOG copy yesterday, and unfortunately, I have the exact problem you describe. In fact, I haven't even gone past the first few seconds of the intro because of the stuttering. Everything renders perfectly well, and from playing the demo some time ago, I know that my computer handles the game normally.

Did you have any luck with fixing the problem at least somewhat? I'd like to be able to actually get to the game itself, but if this happens in every cutscene with music... How many of them are there anyway?

Still, it's a stupid problem... I guess I'll post a technical request, maybe it'd get solved :)

Hi there.

I have not bought it yet, but because I couldn't, mostly.
In my version I have been able to considerably reduce the stuttering by tweaking the audio buffer sizes in the start menu. I notice it only from time to time, and it goes in less than a fraction of second, normally. There have been a couple scenes where it was quite bad, mainly because of their length, but usually it is acceptable.

I don't know how the GOG version works, but I have a launcher which lets me tweak stuff. You can check my settings in the attached screenshot. It shouldn't be too hard to translate to English:
("bloque" = "block", "tamaño" = "size", "cargar" = "load", "mezclador" = "mixer")

The most important factor was the mixer framerate. Too low and the stutter happens all the time, too high and it is terrible every time it hits.
For what I've read in other entries, you might not have access to that tool, so I'll paste my preferences.ini:

; Preference file for The Longest Journey

[Preferences]
bool_AprilHighRes=1
SfxVolume=1.000000
VoiceVolume=1.000000
MusicVolume=1.000000
bool_Subtitles=0
bool_ShadowsOn=0
bool_DisableWarnings=1
bool_SkipCD=1
bool_HighResVideo=1
bool_AllowFastForward=0
bool_UseGFX=1
bool_IsFirstTime=0
SaveDir=01

[DirectX]
GfxDriver=display
int_BitDepth=32
bool_IsDoubleBuffer=1
bool_UseHardware=1
bool_StartFullscreen=1
bool_ForceSingleBuffer=0
bool_AllowUseWBuffer=0

[SoundSection]
DecompressedBlockSize=65536
WorstcaseFrameRate=7
StreamBlockSize =16384
BlockSupplyLength=64

I hope it helps. And if you find a better solution or GOG fixes this in a new installer, please, let me know.

Cheers!
