I love the thief's role in European society. The underdog of social standards, the stalker of the night, the nimble fingered hero. BLAH BLAH BLAH ETC ETC ETC. Okay, well, what does the Robber profession open up for the Thief? And do you get to keep Thief abilities like pick pocketing and burglary.

Picking a new profession means you'll retain the old one's abilities, but you'll be able to build/buy the new one's appropriate building as well (up to the level allowed by your rank). However, you should wait until you reach the highest (6th) rank in the Thief profession (if you haven't yet), as if you change, then only the new profession (Robber) will progress.
As for what it gives... IIRC, only robbers can trash people (makes them lose APs) and kidnap them (you can ask for a ransom in exchange for their freedom, or kidnap a political opponent and keep them captive until after the election...).
And what is the deal when I try to burglarize a house and it says my thiefs are not well-prepared? Do they need a better combat and stealth or a better weapon? They still have daggers, should I give them Rapiers?

Scout the building in question until you have anywhere near 96-100% info on the building. Also, if you are trying to rob a buidling that is a higher building level than what your Thief's hideout is then you will not be able to rob it. Rob something smaller for a while until you can upgrade your Thief's hideout once or twice THEN go after the bigger targets. Also, make sure to get EVERY enhancement possible as it effectively doubles your thieves' "productivity" and prevents the well-trained ones from leaving either by way of dissatisfaction or death.
Yeah, I died along with 3 workers due to plague and my son who has no experience whatsoever is in charge. We are so screwed lol.

What do you mean, "has no experience"? He carries on every profession the parent left him.
Do you mean he has pathetic skills? You can always help that with the use of books, by training, etc.

Yes, my damn son is a disgrace. He has no skills what so ever (I wasn't the bad father, I just got stabbed a few times by those pesky guards because they mistook me for 'guy in robes with nimble fingers wink wink'.) and I am training him as we speak. He still had a few more years. Hopefully my daughter is better because She at least had potential.
