Acquiring the title of nobleman or above, it says here I can get bodyguards. Very well, that's exactly what I need, being a badass crimelord like I am. How do I get bodyguards exactly?

They work as a passive bonus and reduce the chance of you being kidnapped.

Yep, they just reduce the chance of you being kidnapped. They are tied in with the titles like nobleman gets a single bodyguard and a barong gets two, I think is how it goes.
Just think of them as super ninja stealth bodygaurds that you didn't even have to hire. :D
