After recently downloading this great game I am enjoying a run-through in London in "easy" mode,as a Priest.
What are the secrets to avoiding an untimely death from the plague or other health problem? I have found the following items in the central marketplace and am making sure to keep an active one in my pack at all times:
Woolen cloak. This resists disease. It lasts about three years.
Faust's Elixir: I quaffed one of these when the game said I had come down with a sickness and the resulting dialog said I had been cured. Hooray. On the other hand, another time when I clicked one of these as an experiment, the dialog said it was worthless.
Tunic: This is really a defense against death from duels, rather than from disease. I have been keeping one active in case somebody gets the idea that taking down a priest would be fun. I don;t know if this can be activated in time when a duel starts.
Anything else in terms of clothing. potions, or tactics?

Faust's Elixir isn't intended to cure you, but to prolong the lifespan of your character. There's a good chance of it not working, so that's why you got the "useless" dialog once.
Anyway, if you're sick, you can always go and see the doctor (from the actions menu), that way you can spend a few APs and some money for a chance to get rid of the disease afflicting your character. (Save first, though, as it has a chance of not curing you, in which case it's best to just load a save from right before the cure attempt.)
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback on the items, and the suggestion about seeing the doctor.
Having a good time with the game. Except somebody picked my pocket in the marketplace. Arrgh! What apostate would pick on a Priest? :(
Oh, one more hint to spare you some severe annoyance... Always have a tankard of that drunkard beer in your inventory. Some times, robber barons select the player's character as a target for kidnapping, meaning you have to spend AT LEAST one whole turn not doing anything (your character is in dungeon, after all), and pay a ransom. However, if it happens, just load up your most recent save, drink the beer and go on; it prevents the character from being kidnapped. It costs you half your Rhetorics points, though, but it's worth it.
Have a great time playing The Guild!
