Hey guys and gals,
So I am trying out the guard profession for the first time, and well it is confusing for me.
I have a few specific problems that I will list, but general advice is welcome.
Problem 1 : Profit. I cant get it. I send out my guards to patrol and I get a pittance at the end of the day, like 50 gold. You get more, about 250 if you kill a thief, but even when I have overwhelming force I can just kill one a day, if I am lucky. The rest run. This seems to be due to limitations in the combat system. thieves just walk past my guards while they hack away, but because they are moving they never get hit.
I think a partial solution is ranged weapons. Have yet to try lots of ranged weapons.
Anyway, at best I end up with about 250 gold, which does not come near covering expenses.
General questions: What is the point of investigating a building? Is that to allow raids? What about Guarding a building? I assume the guarding stops thieves, only useful for your own businesses.
Anyway, thanks in advance

Hey there!
1. Don't forget you can only choose the Guard as a second profession, and there's a reason for that. Most of the time, you really won't make much money with it. However, once you've explored a hideout (not investigated, but explored), you can go and raid it, which can net quite a nice amount of money. You'll need highly-skilled men for the raid, of course.
2. Investigation is an other way of earning revenue, and a much easier and regular one than raiding. It means you'll investigate a business (thus it can't be done to private residences) to see if everything goes right there. If you investigate a place where not everything goes as it should (legally), you'll get to collect a fine, which can be quite a sum.
Tip: if you've found some placesto collect fines in a certain turn, it's advisable to check on that place regularly, especially if it brought much money. These late Medieval people just don't seem to be too keen on learning from their mistakes ;-).
Thank you! That is immensely helpful.
Other advice is still welcome, of course.
About guarding a spot: it isn't only useful for guarding your business, but if someone tries to break in into a building in the vicinity of the guarded spot, your men will stop them and you1ll be rewarded. Don't expect much, and it's not really regular, but still, guarding *can* pay off.
I have played a little more, and now I am impressed. The real profit comes from the fact that you can raid and permanently seize certain property (anything military related)! It doubled my fortune. I control half the buildings in town, all the thief guilds, robber forts and town guards.

:-)
Glad you eventually found this profession to be so usable.
when i played the guard i found the most profit in raiding the robber fortresses, seizing them for myself then selling them immidiately, rinse and repeat.
Once you have enough money for a castle or two, it just feels right to have six or eight fully armed and trained men to adhere to your every command, and give the scumm that robbed your business a nice talk to. It's a shame that the Master worker part of the game is mostly broken, if it worked to its full potential I would buy five or six maxed guardhouses all round the city and have my very own dictatorship. :-)
