it says in the manual that < and > will control combat message speed.....but I can't get it to work! everything goes by so fast to read....

what am I doing wrong?

Try pressing , or . (< or >, but without shift held down).

Of note, there are some fights (including one famous one in particular) where you will *want* the message speed to be too fast for you to read; do you really want to read 198 messages of enemies missing, or 396 messages about whether the spell you just cast killed the particular enemy?

(Those numbers are *not* exaggerations.)

i remember those guys they murdered me 1st time i encountered them that was nasty

Actually, in the IIgs version (the one included in the collection), there is an even more ridiculous fight. To trigger it, go to the Temple of the Mad God and say that the Mad God's name is "burger".

(This easter egg also exists in Bard's Tale 3 (all versions), minus the fight.)
