Halberd does way more damage, despite the fact, that the War Axe stats are way better.

Why?

Talking about my Paladin and Warrior
Halbard has always done 1d16 damage (average 8.5), as compared to 2d4 for the War Axe (average 5). It is, according to the original manual, the strongest non-magical weapon. Therefore, you should get Halbards for your front line and keep them until you get something better (or your Monk reaches 6th level).

In fact, even the unarmed attack or a low level Monk (5 or less) wil be outdamaged by the Halbard. Yes, Monks can equip this weapon, and it is a good idea to do so until level 6. (I note that the original manual describes Monks as "perhaps the best fighter of all after he reaches the 6th level".)

the damage values from the tooltip are misleading big time - how am I supposed to know whether it's 1d16 or 2d4 or whatever?

In the original version of the game, you don't; the game does not supply any stats for your equipment. The only thing you can easily determine is the AC effect of equipment; otherwise, you just have to work out what weapons are better via experimenting. At least the remaster provides *some* information.

(Perhaps the remaster should be updated to make the damage values more useful.)

Tool tips are accurate. War Axe is melee and thrown weapon (you can see range in the tool tip), and because of that the thrown damage is shown in the tool tip instead of melee damage (I guess as it is superior to melee damage). You can always check the melee damage of your equipped weapons on your character sheet. But yes, it would be nice if the tool tips showed both damages.

the tooltip compares the throwing damage of War Axe with the melee damage of the Halberd?

Doesn't make sense but it's an explanation :-)

thank you

There's a weapon in BT2 and BT3 where the comparison can also be misleading: the Song Axe. The Song Axe does decent damage when thrown (particularly if you're playing The Archer's Tune), but its melee damage is terrible (worse than the Bardsword). With that said, you are probably not choosing a Bard's weapon with damage in mind, and the Song Axe is the superior of the two when taking that into account. (Also, the Song Axe isn't limited to one throw.)
