I've been trying to play the classic version of Bard's Tale 1, but it keeps freezing during character creation. Any suggestions? I have Windows 7, but I'm running the game in Windows XP compatibility mode as an administrator.
Nevermind. Wrong info on my side.

I am having freeze ups on The Bard's Tale I, but it is usually when I'm traveling about the city. Last night my party defeated enemies in a house and the treasure screen froze.

I hate the thought of re-installing the game for I've got two parties all between fourth and eighth level.

Any one else having this problem?

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and the game is opened as an administrator.
I too am experiencing freezes when wandering the city (windows 7 in xpsp3 compatibility), which forces me to ctrl-alt-del my way out, losing all progress. My characters are all around level 3 so I'm only capable of exploring Skara Brae right now. Really no point in continuing if all I can look forward to is random freezes. I see a similar thread on the steam forum but I don't know if this has been addressed in any way. Really frustrating.
You could try playing the game in MESS instead (details here). This also allows quick saving anywhere during the game.
Thanks Arkose. I finally managed to get MESS to work thanks to your link (first go at emulators so bear with me). I noticed an immediate improvement to sounds as well as music (no more annoying pops or stuttering). The load times are long just like the old days which is fine. I'll have to play a bit to see if the freezing issue has been resolved.

Question for you: How do you save anywhere in the game? There is an option (under File) to 'Save state' but I don't believe that was what you meant.

Yes, a save state is what allows you to save anywhere in an emulator, regardless of where the game originally allowed saving.

In the case of MAME you choose the save option and then press the slot to save it to (I think both numbers and letters work for this).
Will I lose my characters transferring from the GOG version to the Emulator?

No, characters are stored on one of the disk images (bt1d2.2mg) so they'll carry over seamlessly.

Can you explain the transfer from Bard's Tale (BT1) from GOG to MESSUI? I cannot find my character saves from BT1 to copy the bt1d1.2mg. I am playing the Bards Tale 1 not the 2005. I don't want to lose my characters.

I followed all the steps on the MESSUI website too.

The disk images are saved in %LOCALAPPDATA%\inXile entertainment

Copy those and use as described in the MESS steps.
Incidentally, I cannot figure out how to get MESSUI to use the Apple IIgs system roms that I have. It just complains that it can't find what it wants, but it doesn't give me anything to go on, since I HAVE what it wants.

Incidentally this is messui 0.161. I may try the command line version next.

Oh, answer found over here:
http://www.gog.com/forum/the_bards_tale/classic_bt1_animations_seem_hyperactive/post7

For some reason MESS wants an Apple IIe (enhanced) rom to start up. I suppose the Apple IIgs probably DID ship with this rom, though I never bothered to dump it because I wasn't interested in running Apple IIe software. KEGS never cared about this rom to boot, I guess MESS is just fussy.

I've encountered a few random freezes in Skara Brae. Very annoying, and even more annoying because the game only saves progress when you actively Remove characters from your party at the AG. Is this issue under investigation? Running Win8.1.

Thanks for the MESSUI solution. I'm reluctant to install an emulator specifically to run BT1-3, but if that's what it takes...

By the way, for me, the disk images are located at C:\GOG Games\The Bards Tale\Res

Seems like you lost some of the path there.
My eventual solution was to play them on the Mac. No lockups.

The MESS solution worked reliably, but it had the following things I didn't like:

* MESSUI would crash if i tried to save state
* Accurate disk load speeds were too slow for me, especially without an onscreen indicator of disk activity
* Toggling warp-speed handled the load times, but keystrokes for warp were only available during partial emulation
* During partial emulation, escape instantly quit the emulator losing my game

All in all, it was just a bit too error-prone for me. Maybe someone else has a better set of solutions.

Yeah, I'm really considering going for money back, since I got this primarily for the original trilogy. This is the only AppleII game I want to run, so it's a bit of overkill just to get MESSUI for this one. I'll probably just wait and see if inXile gets a better version running.

As for the path: it actually is just that: C:\GOG Games\The Bards Tale\Res
I guess Res is short for Resources and this directory also has subdirectories containing movies etc.
