Having just bought all 5 games on GOG and having never played these games before, what is the recommended order to play them in.

i understand Overseer is a remake of Mean Streets, as such should it be played before UAKM?

my plan is to have them finished in time to play Project Fedora (which i had backed) :)

(couldn't decide if this should have been ticked a "help me" topic)
If you actually want to play all five before playing Project Fedora, just play them in order. The first two are kind of rough though so if you want to have the most fun at first I would play UAKM, Pandora and then Overseer.

Although Overseer mostly takes place in the past, Mean Streets timeline - told through flashbacks, there is a storyline in Overseer that takes place after the Pandora Directive that I can only assume will be continued in Project Fedora.
Cheers for the answer.
Wow, nice, I picked these up not too long ago, but had no idea a new game was coming out. I loved them back in my childhood, and decided I'd love to play them over...and now finding out a new one is coming...very awesome.

My suggested order is MM and on, skip first...go back to it if you have time. I believe Martian Memorandum was a typical type adventure game, whereas the first one had a flight sim if I remember correctly...been so long...but I can't remember If i even bothered finishing it.

Good luck,

most people will tell you to skip these first 2 as they are not in the same class as the later games. Personally I would start at UAKM .
Under a Killing Moon is the first with FMV beyond the occasional little video clip and the first to show Chandler Avenue and its memorable mutant inhabitants. Even though the story follows a few things started in Martian Memorandum, its extremely friendly to series newcomers. Its the best starting point, Pandora Directive is an even better game but works best with knowing UAKM. I would then play Martian Memorandum after that and save Overseer for last since it ends with that cliffhanger and will get you jazzed for Fedora/Tesla. I'd just skip Mean Streets, still can't get into that game and its not a good first impression for the series at all. You may be curious to play it though after Overseer to see all the things alike and different the two are.

Those people aren't true Tex Murphy fans*, because Tex's first two adventures are as great as the rest. I especially like Mean Streets, which is IMO better than Martian Memorandum. I strongly recommend playing Mean Streets before Overseer, because while the basic storyline is same the narrative and gaming experience is very different.

*I apologize if this statement insults someone, but you don't see this kind of behavior among other fan communities. For example King's Quest fans don't tell you that you should skip the early AGI games and focus just to later games of the series. Active attempts to discourage others from exploring where the legend of Tex Murphy started and preventing them from enjoying his earliest adventures aren't just fan behavior.

I mainly recommend skipping the first two, or at least just Mean Streets, is because it will drive away more than it will create fans. The speeder simulation stuff alone in MS will make many swear off the whole series. UAKM or Overseer works as a better introduction IMHO than just going into the early stuff. I appreciated Martian Memorandum better when I already played and finished the three FMV games first. I honestly still can't get that into Mean Streets.
Thanks to everyone who posted above.

I just got into the series - I started Tesla Effect for a few minutes and noticed right away that Tex and the rest of the characters are constantly making references to backstory from the previous games, so I'm definitely going to play the older games first - hopefully BFG will fix the sound bug in Tesla Effect in the meantime.

Reading through this topic, I think I'm going to attempt them all in order of release. I'm going to at least try Martian Memorandum and Mean Streets before writing them out completely, but I'll make sure to play through the 3 FMV games for certain before starting Tesla Effect again.

I would start with UAKM followed by The Pandora Directive and Overseer. Tex Murphy 1 and 2 is optional and can be skipped although Tesla Effect did make a funny 8-bit shootout reference of those games.
